Even if the frequency of a female voice is more attention getting, there is no reason that it can't be an informative assistant with out the sexualization. Maybe getting people used to hearing let's get back on topic would be good for everyone.

Saw Rogue One. Loved it - except the music was a little off.

Enjoyed the story and thought the actors had great chemistry. I liked how it showed just how human leaders are - even of a resistance - wanting to play it as safe as possible and willing to sacrifice innocent people because they don't want to believe the baddies are as bad as they are. I found the music inconsistent at times with romantic notes at conflict points. Oh and the Leia cgi face shape was disconcerting.

Looking forward to rewatching.

I always wondered about Cold FX. It didn't seem to work for me or anyone I knew but Health Canada so ok. I also didn't realize how useless multi-vitamins were until my doctor casually said they're a waste of money when I asked about taking calcium.

I only want to maintain health in a cost effective way. But there are parent out there who are ineffectively treating their children's illnesses and Health Canada has done little to help them until now. Decisions need to be made on verifiable statements.

Many, many do not and most of the time the women don't share their feelings even with their spouse. I was surprised at how many women told me their miscarriage stories in an effort to cheer me up. This -> the internet is a reflection of us

This -> the internet is a reflection of us

Why is politeness in person so hard? Because we've become used to interacting on the internet where you so easily villainize others. Once other we see the person and their response putting on that filter is hard. Not that it matters because you can run back to your internet bubble.

I'm fostering self awareness. If I can't form a concise, opposing argument I keep scrolling. Sometimes, no amount of facts will make a difference. On my threads I've started deleting posts that are off topic. If the topic is ACA and you say Bill Clinton ran a whorehouse while in the White house that comment gets deleted as the topic is ACA.

I think a lot of the problem is click-bait headlines coupled with people's emotional response to the headlines then not reading the article. I do that too so I'm working on stopping that.

Killjoys and Dark Matter in the summer and Five-0 in the winter.

Growing up I watched the original Hawaii 5-0 with my parents. I didn't start watching the reboot until a guy at work told me he enjoyed it. Not sure if he's still watching.

I find character development on Five-0 really interesting. One show McGarrett and Danno had an argument about 2nd amendment rights with both sides well stated. Everyone is emotionally supportive of each other. Even when they have a bad guy in that room it's more of a psychological play than rubber hose violence.

"Alarm sounds are engineered to elicit particular responses in humans. And yet, sometimes, humans choose not to respond, having decided that the situation is not urgent enough or that the sound is a false alarm. Audio alarm designers seek to avoid this by designing sounds that have an intuitive meaning and precisely reflect the level of urgency. But what makes an “awooga” sound more or less urgent than a “ding”? And how do you create an alarm noise that’s annoying enough to get someone’s attention, but not so annoying that said person disables the alarm?

And how do you create an alarm noise that’s annoying enough to get someone’s attention, but not so annoying that said person disables the alarm?

Auditory alarm designers like Carryl Baldwin face these questions regularly. Baldwin, a human factors psychologist, constructs sounds in a lab, tests those sounds on human subjects to see if they are communicating the intended meaning, and ensures they are appropriate for use as alarms in household, aviation, medical, and automotive settings."

The Affordable Care Act will be edited - not suspended - by the incoming administration.

I refuse to call it Obamacare because just using that name blinds people to the benefit of the plan. The ACA will remain as the initial step toward detaching basic health care coverage from employment. Plans will be cheaper and provide less services so insurance companies can retain profits. Hatch even makes coverage mandatory with payment through tax credit. I'm a big fan of means testing. Well off people just don't need to add to their hoard by getting money from the government, subsidies or tax credit.

Don’t take just the existence of this COP as the stamp of approval for it; ... Do your own due diligence before making irrevocable choices.

^^This is why I continued as I struggled through my sustainable resources MOOC. I wanted to understand policy and the role my decisions make. The data is out there, publicly available. It's even lumped into convenient groups like transportation, industrial and residential. There's just simple calculating anyone can do once they are shown the conversions.

How does the carbon tax work and what should it be to drive change? 2nd or 3 week. It's unfortunate that these are all health effects so people sweep them under the rug of "it won't happen to me and if it does it's in the future." It's easy to exclude that from personal core values.

BTW $10 carbon tax is an appeal to the core value of spending as little as possible on something. It should be at least $50 to drive change that would keep coal as a backburner baseline energy source.

Really, just by being in the drugstore by the pharmacy, it is implied supplements are healthy even though there is product quality control. Interestingly, the items on the list may be listed as a natural health product but I'm not sure I would lump vitamins and minerals in with echinecea. I can't wait for medical AI that gives recommendations solely on efficacy and all recommendations are covered under our health care. Dr Sharma re-iterates the goal should be to stop the gain.

So many people get dismayed about not loosing weight after making a behaviour change that they forget to reward themselves for not gaining. Last time I made an effort to change behaviour I get goals and used non-food rewards. A lot of that when by the wayside after my accident. No appetite (for a couple years) keeps the pounds off. But there was a food change in there as well. Fred has gone vegan and we avoid low nutrient food by not keeping a lot of it in the house.

Tastes change, we can work with that as part of a health challenge.

Yay, troubleshooting. Contacted #FitBit because our Aria scale started working intermittently. I'm happy with the outcome.

Are you so busy you don't troubleshoot and just replace stuff? That's where I was with the Aria. It was burning through batteries and being unreliable. I was willing to buy another but Fred said nope, not long enough life span. So I went to their forums looking for help. Sure enough someone else had the same problem and were told to contact customer service. Did some troubleshooting and provided proof of ownership and got an out of warranty replacement.

I've found most manufacturers stand behind their product. You just need to be adult in your expectations.

As a bonus, I had a high oil level !?! warning on the Macan and it turned out to be poor quality gas. Filled up and the warning went away. Whew.

Incidentally, Pincus et al. had originally looked at hormonal birth control for men. "It was rejected for men due to the number of side effects," says Grigg-Spall, "including testicle shrinking." It was believed women would tolerate side effects better than men, who demanded a better quality of life.

Racism is negative stereotying (this is about the black woman doctor whose qualitfications were questioned when she responded to a request for help). It's nice that the doctor didn't reveal the flight attendant's name. Bigoted actions against the doctor doesn't give her a free pass to write weight based slurs against the flight attendant. I hope the flight attendant examines their biases but I hope the Doctor also examines their bias. They are suppose to help all people, not just the one deemed worthy by fitting a physical cohort.

How Exercise May Turn White Fat Into Brown

How Exercise May Turn White Fat Into Brown

“my advice is, exercise as much as you can. We know it’s healthy and now we’re beginning to understand better why”

Exercise may aid in weight control and help to fend off diabetes by improving the ability of fat cells to burn calories, a new study reports. It may do this in part by boosting levels of a hormone called irisin, which is produced during exercise and which may help to turn ordinary white fat into much more metabolically active brown fat, the findings suggest.

A new kite-driven power station is being built near Stranraer in Scotland, and will be one of the first large-scale commercial power stations of its kind.

A new kite-driven power station is being built near Stranraer in Scotland, and will be one of the first large-scale commercial power stations of its kind.

Kite-driven power stations are a relatively new idea. The concept involves using multiple kites to harness wind power and drive turbines on the ground. The kite is attached to the ground-based turbines with a tether, and when the wind forces the kite to rise, the tether spins the turbine to generate electricity. By using a system with two kites, in which one rises as the other falls, power can be generated continuously.

The firm building the power station, Kite Power Systems, says its system is so cheap and cost-effective that it won't need a government subsidy, unlike most renewable energy plants.

(Of possible interest to Scott FW.)

Taxes provide that infrastructure support and relieving business and wealthy people from paying robs everyone of services.

A work colleague is getting a dog because their spouse wants one. I suggested a wire kennel.

This person doesn't particularly like dogs and hasn't really had a good experience with them. I suggested a wire kennel for when they are at work as well as at night (since bed sharing is not a team goal) for peace of mind. Our guys are older but adjust quite well to staying in the kennel below together for hours - the only problem is they end up tipping over the water at some point (I know a pail hung on the wall is needed).

This dog is only a year old so it will be quite active so lots of playing and walking at first. That will be the spouse's job though. I was going to suggest the coworker do a lot of random treat rewarding when the dog is doing good things without doing bad things. Like random treats when being quiet or just going in the kennel.

I have to start thinking of these things as we'll probably be getting a puppy in the next 5 years and I"ll be used to these seniors. When Milo is snoozing in kennel it's easy to forget his registered name is Mile o' Mayhem because he was such a handful as a pup.

Cash incentive is how I quit smoking.

As the saying goes, though, you have to be ready to make a change. In this case a co-worker and I put money in a pot, added to it on a weekly basis depending on whether we smoked or not. The pot went to the person who fell off the no smoking wagon last. Most importantly for me, there was a defined time limit of 3 months. Long enough to build a habit, short enough to not feel like forever if I wanted to return to the activity.

Right now we go to punishment by way of taxing - which works for a lot of people right now.

Great work Jasper Legion! Kayaking is a great choice for getting out

I have to admit that I've shifted to kayaking from golf (twisting ankles) and impact activities because of my ankle. It's a great way to be active and connect with nature. Our prairie lakes I enjoy paddling along lilies, seeing fish jump and loons ducking. It's hard not to feel peaceful.

Plus it's important for everyone to have access to activities to keep them from being isolated when they don't want to be.

Weather luck changed today, windy and cloudy trip to Little Fishing Lake.

Last weekend we went to Little Fishing Lake, SK and it was lovely and calm. There is a nice boat launch with a fish cleaning station. Almost directly across the lake from the boat launch is a nice little beach we can play with the dogs off leash. Accessible by boat and quad.

Today, Fred finally got to try the sail. Duffy lost sight of me and decided to try swimming back to the truck! Got to the far end but decided not to stop. Duffy just swam over so we could all be together. I got to experience waves - much wetter good thing the water is still warm. Ended up wearing my Level 6 SUP jacket with the hood up to protect my ears - yes it was that windy.

Splashing through waves really showed the short coming of HOBIE's method for attaching the steering to the seat. The screw was constantly backing off resulting in wave broadsides. If the craft wasn't so stable it would be a problem. We're going to do a Red Green* thing but with bungie cable instead of duct tape.

*Do not ask who/what Red Green is.

I wear a tracker but am aware health is not simply calorie balance. Education shouldn't be left to food producers.

In some ways I think it's a good thing to tie food to exercise so people see how much they need to do - at a minimum - and encourage physical play. There is so much benefit to finding activities you enjoy - teamwork, friendship, stress relief, feeling of challenge/accomplishment. Nutrition needs more of a focus though, not just steps.

Safe design (aka ergonomics) is about routine things working in an expected manner.

If you've ever gone somewhere that you drive on the other side of the road you know how long it takes to adjust reflexes. For a long time habit can jerk you into the path of a hazard. This gear shift design is totally alien to North American culture. Add the shape and responses together without interlocks and you have irresponsible design. Tones can be irritating, seat belt not on, door open, hatch opening warning and, yes, car not in park when turned off but humans are distractable.

Maybe it's just the people I interact with but it sure seems like less victim blaming and more recognition that all the precautions in the world do not help when someone chooses to be violent towards you. No one goes out planning to be directly affected by violence but violent people often have a history of violent events with little deterrence.

It takes a lot of discipline to save money, I know we go in waves of saving and spending. Plus there are so many hidden costs to home ownership - property taxes, equipment for upkeep or maintenance fees and the like. Retiring first certainly gives you the freedom to live somewhere less expensive.

Hobie Inflatable kayaks are a great option if you don't like towing.

Hobie Inflatable kayaks are a great option if you don't like towing.

We've had our kayaks for awhile so thought it was time for a product review. We got them so we could put them in the Macan rather than towing or putting them on the roof.

They set up really quickly, we use an electric pump with a hand pump finish. With two of us working we can get them in the water in less that 10 minutes as long as the parking location is close to the launch. Usually one of us pumps up the kayaks and the other gets the chairs, paddles and dogs organized then puts away bags as they are no longer needed.

Tear down is a little more involved as we like to wipe it down. Still, working as a team, we can get done in less than 20 minutes as long as the dogs settle down. I've started leashing them to the truck and we're getting better with folding. Once stuff is in the bag the vehicle is finished packing in under 5 minutes.

The kayaking experience is awesome as these are very stable. They kind of have to be since we are constantly maneuvering around with the dogs, either popping them from the back to the front of the seat or in and out of the boat (from the water or other kayak). Fred has been out in whitecaps and the performance was good. I've only been out in wake waves and again, very stable feeling. The mirage drive is great for distances. Needless to say, much easier to peddle than paddle. That said, I find I can paddle as quickly under calm conditions, it's just that my shoulders tire and the dogs can get in the way if they are restless.

Cons - they do take longer to get in the water and they seem heavier but that may be because of the weight distribution when packing up. Fred has had problems with his steering (12'). I finally sewed a bead on each knot to prevent the line from pulling through. According to Hobie, because the tubes that hold the lines can pinch it's important to reduce folding. That's not as much of a factor with the 9' that I have.

Now that we've been using them at least once a week since we got them I feel we've hit the highs and lows. While spendy, they really fit the bill and we should be using them for many, many years.

This looks like a great app, syncs with Google Calendar and has its own web app.

Largish lake but not very deep I think. Cabins with sandy beaches. Duffy swam over to me then settled for the rest of the trip. I think Milo was looking at fish.

I faced the same dissonance when I stopped colouring my hair.

You get used to seeing a certain version of you in the mirror, I'm much younger in my head:) And yes, cosmetic tones are much more important when you don't have dark hair to balance them.

It's important that you can live with your self image.

Cancer woo - we've all been there

When my mom was at the "we can do nothing more" end of her disease, she embraced a lot of alternative treatments. As long as they didn't actively harm her, I just didn't say anything. I certainly wouldn't say something to a stranger.

Lifesum vs. myfitnesspal. The winner is myfitnesspal.

Lifesum vs. myfitnesspal. The winner is myfitnesspal.

Ever since I got my first FitBit, I've been food logging, off and on. Food logging has been shown to be effective in maintaining weight but it can be painful. Smart phones make it easier but one thing that really makes it easy is including a bar code scanner. Another is a robust recipe system.

Since I started using SHealth, I've been looking for a food logger. SHealth has a robust database with fast searching but doesn't include a bar code scanner - really Samsung? Enter Lifesum. The bar code database is not nearly as extensive as myfitnesspal but it's better than nothing as as people add information it will, of course, grow.

What about recipes? I went to the web rather than entering on my mobile device. SHealth is an app only. Lifesum made it difficult to find and didn't save my recipe after I painstakingly entered it...twice. myfitnesspal made it easy to find recipe entry and imported the ingredients from websites for easy editing and tweaking. Oh yeah. With Fred eating vegan I do a lot of recipe adjustments. Once the ingredient list is saved a nutrition table is generated. Nice.

Cooking is fun, food logging not so much but if you're struggling to maintain your weight you could give myfitnesspal a try.

Went kayaking today at Whitney Lake.

Went fairly early so we were on our way home around noon when all the power boats and seadoos came out to play. There were fishers and other kayakers out and there was enough wind for Fred to give sailing a try.

Yoga is a balance of strength and flexibility for both men and women. And almost no one can hold the pose below

Men have to get over this idea that classes are "girly". If you don't learn the correct alignment you can cause a lot of soft tissue injury. With yoga, it's also a matter of relaxing into a position rather than forcing yourself into a pretzel. It actually is a great workout to do with a partner because everyone gets to a different point in a move. I really miss being able to enjoy pickup yoga classes. I am too distracted by the difference in range of movement between my left and right lower body. Jock-Yoga could be for me if it wasn't in a male only venue.

I read Consumer Reports as part of my Texture subscription. Great issue this month.

I've more associated it with large purchases- cars, appliances etc but they are really good for all levels of consumer information when it comes to spending hard earned money on daily "stuff". It can be hard to recognize and seal those small persistent cash leaks. One place I know we're bad is buying more vegetables than we have planned to eat by the next shopping day. Fred can change his menu and all of a sudden something won't be used.

Frequent nut consumption associated with less inflammation

Frequent nut consumption associated with less inflammation

In a study of more than 5,000 people, investigators from Brigham and Women's Hospital have found that greater intake of nuts was associated with lower levels of biomarkers of inflammation, a finding that may help explain the health benefits of nuts. The results of the study appear July 27 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. "Population studies have consistently supported a protective role of nuts against cardiometabolic disorders such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, and we know that inflammation is a key process in the development of these diseases," said corresponding author Ying Bao, MD, ScD, an epidemiologist in BWH's Channing Division of Network Medicine. "Our new work suggests that nuts may exert their beneficial effects in part by reducing systemic inflammation."

Looking for a B-I-G storage box? I found a Jardin 20 cu.ft. box at Home Depot.

We needed something to hold all our kayak stuff, including the sail. I also wanted room to store stuff over winter - so all our PFDs, and wet suits has to fit as well. The box came as a flat pack so it easily fit in the Macan. It was mostly click together with a few stabilizing screws. The directions were clear and I popped it together quickly. It doesn't seem super sturdy but a box this size will have a lot of flex unless there are internal braces.
