Last sunset of 2017.

Last sunset of 2017.

it's cold out or I would have gone to a more horizon style view.

Goal for Alberta government has been diversifying their economy to better weather economic storms better.

Goal for Alberta government has been diversifying their economy to better weather economic storms better.

I moved here in the early 80s. It feels like diversifying the economy from agriculture and oil/gas has been a constant challenge. With the last bust, smaller centres took a big hit because it's so hard to diversify during the good times. I talked to a lot of people who had been in higher paying oil jobs who were now doing service work - steady but lower paying. Seems all regions in Canada acknowledge and struggle with economic diversity.

But this article implies that's not common knowledge. ...capitalist societies have taken as faith that the key to prosperity is specializing in what they’re naturally good at... is diametrically opposed to challenging the status quo and encouraging innovation. Educated elites need to "discover" ...the complexity and diversity of products made in a region tend to be a proxy for the knowledge and know-how of its workforce. This makes workers more valuable and gives them a broader range of career options, upping their bargaining power. By contrast, countries—or regions like Central Appalachia—that make relatively few things tend to constrain people’s opportunities to learn new skills, whether on the job or at school.

I think the actual challenge is transitioning from a raw materials sector - certainly that seems to be the case for the Appalachians.

Last time we bought a vehicle, I wrote a cheque at the dealership. We self financed. It never occurred to me to get a bank draft (or even a certified cheque apparently). Mostly I email money. When we got Duffy I direct deposited into the breeder's account and Duffy caught a flight to Calgary. One big ripoff to me is when we do an EFT to the Cook Islands. We pay a fee to send that's not too bad I guess and they pay a fee to receive. It's apparently cheaper than taking a credit card.

I only accept cheques because I can do mobile banking and take a picture.

Full disclosure - I got my car towed immediately for not having up to date stickers on my plate. Yes it cost a lot of money to bail out of the yard; I had to pay OT towing charges because it was a Sunday morning and there was a fine. No criminal charges. I would say I was adequately punished.

Awesome that there is visual art that showing a range of people integrated into society. Backs up archelogy findings of destroyed cities in Africa. Again victors are pretty good at destroying the history of their opponents. We see it in the recent destruction of ancient statues and buildings that have stood for centuries. It's why opponents have nothing but threats in response.

Visions Under Construction: How many devices is too many?
After hours of rebooting watches, phones and routers, do you still love the technology that surrounds many of us? Are you concerned about security and privacy? Are we living in a geek utopia or headed for a dismal dystopia? What is your vision of how we live this? These are a few of the questions I hope to ask folks who participate.

I am one of the satisfied customers but I usually travel for leisure. Last time I traveled for business xthe screeners were pleasant and competent but the flights got messed up. It helps to have a bright comfortable waiting area with free wifi ;) I've always precleared in Canada which is nice because if I got denied entry at least I'm at home; sometimes I worry about being in transit. I get regular criminal checks as a first aid instructor so I don't know why I would be denied but there doesn't have to be a reason.

As for Trump. He's already defunding a lot of international programs and is on track to kill NAFTA anyway. We shouldn't allow him to shouldn't kill our principals when so much has been made of them with the newest version of the TPP. The US should be spending that saved international funding for similar programs (education, sanitation) in poverty stricken states or infrastructure. I charge my powered on phone at night...science! battery technology! It is in DND mode though.

Some wierd beliefs come out on forums (fora?). Like not charging to 100%. That was a temp fix until recall for the Note 7. Spectrometry works best between 25 and 80% because of linear response. I suppose that could apply to batteries but does it matter? The number of charging cycles is way more than a typical user would do. The only charging "rule" that I used to follow was if the battery goes to zero, you have to wall charge it intially. I don't even know if that's true anymore. With wireless charging there's not reason to go to zero.

Powering off? I try to remember to power off (as opposed to restart) monthly? Definitely not every night but I do position devices so I can't see the charging LED.

Initial impressions. Set up was a bit more complicated with turning off and on the WiFi. The SmartThings Skill is better than the way Google works. I have a couple dual outlet plugs and Alexa will control them separately. The nice thing is once you set up one time, as long as you log in the same for each additional device it connects well.

We both like that Google says what it just did; Alexa just says ok...very loudly.

The Space Traders is prescient and tragic.

While the US is not as in dire need of saving as it is in the story, the events after the Traders land is parallel to the 2016 election. In the end, the white people clumped together to ensure they benefit first without knowing or caring about an entire demonized population. See for yourself.

Unless you are made to go to clubs or dancers are kidnapped and made to perform, what's the problem?

Unless you are made to go to clubs or dancers are kidnapped and made to perform, what's the problem?

Disclosure - I went to the odd strip club and "Ladies night" event in my early 20s.

In Vancouver you could go to bars where there was strippers after 3 pm. Women could make some money (because strippers were women), patrons could spend some money. There was no touching, the entertainment was like a TV (watch if you want to) the music was usually ok. The worse was heckling and if I was with a group it would speak up against that behaviour . I could observe other group; men seemed to be treating it as a background.

Women on the other hand. I went to a couple ladies nights and a lot of the talent was poor (dancers that couldn't keep a beat!?!) and the women were even grabbier and embarrassing to be around. No wonder women are against strip clubs is that's what they act like when they attend an event.

The idea of consent and equality is hard to work towards when one part of society is considered incapable of making reasoned choices like choosing stripping commercial dancing. For the event tagged - I do find the "private sessions" problematic but as long as there's a clear payment structure and no cohersion. While I find the women flogging extra drinks to be enforcing gender norms - again, hopefully she is well paid.

Recipients should be aware of how the donations are raised though.

Stem cells that generate fat tissue have circadian clock

It matters when you eat, which is consistent with previous research.

New discoveries about the circadian-clock machinery in the precursors to fat cells may explain why shift workers are prone to metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, a Stanford study finds...The new research also illuminates a long-debated question: Should we avoid snacking at night? "I have to say, I think there's some truth to that," Feldman said. "I do think the timing of our meals is an overlooked factor; our bodies work best if we eat in defined periods during the day, and not during periods when we are not supposed to be active."

So far so fun.

So far so fun.

Sounds quality not the best but ok for housework music. The Echo will be here in a week and we'll see how that compares. The Dot may be going back...

First 48 hours with Gear Sport.

First 48 hours with Gear Sport.

I wasn't convinced I wanted to upgrade from my S2 Classic because it's the same size face and the same specs but...the more I heard about new features the more interested I got. Plus the IP 68 rating now that we're kayaking. It's 10 grams heavier and with the squirkle case shape, not as sleek as the S2 Classic.

Even though the specs are the same the device is much more responsive. The ergonomics are even better than the Classic. The 2 buttons are still quite flush with the case but now the back button has a different texture than the home button. The bezel is easier to grip to turn as well. On the down side; the bezel isn't quite as flush with the screen so I notice bumping into the edge when swiping up. It also feels a bit flimsier. Tizen 3 has some nice changes.

There was a lot about this being an activity based device so I've done 2 workouts so far, a pilates and a walk. Heart rate monitor is really solid. Starts monitoring as soon as the widget it turned on. With the Classic there wasn't a choice of workouts on a screen. You can either trigger or have it auto detect. Now that I have location turned on my route is automatically mapped. Pretty slick.

In spite of the size it's very comfortable to wear. The sport band will be handy in the summer when we're kayaking but I'll be switching to a leather one for winter.

Love my Instant Pot - didn't know it was Canadian. Cool

We found out early we prefer to cook stuff in a glass bowl on the trivet rather than going through the hassle of cleaning the big pot. We mostly use it for beans since you can go from cupboard to table in less than an hour. Definitely not the same flavour as slow cooking unless you amend the spices.

Have you tried it? What do you cook?

I only have dogs but pretty sure they don't understand why their loving human is standing by (or worse helping!) with vaccinations. Ouch. I always keep in mind a childhood event where I fell of a swing. I scraped my knee and thought it was interesting until mom rushed over all sympathetic. Since then I wait for the reaction before I react.

Never skip the home inspection, especially if it's your 1st time in that market.

When we moved to a different city we had no feel for the housing market and the realtor was really focused on helping the sellers and the expense of the buyers. Sure that their job but your only real defence is the home inspection. We found a house size had been overstated so the bank would not mortgage even if we came up with the cash difference.

How many people even read beyond headlines? Complexity is a vice to the layperson. All a politician can do is make sound bites and have their history and actions form their argument. Most people think government actually controls economies when we live in a capitalist country.

An easy way to save on electricity is to turn lights off - but what if you keep forgetting? This $20 switch is super reliable and there's a YouTube video to help with installation (always turn off the breaker). There is a range of times to stay on, day light detection and the motion detector is very sensitive. When we open the door the light is on by the time we step in. Best of all, the dogs do not trigger it.

Yes it's sad that Québécois are excluded from this contest but perhaps Quebec law is what need to be amended. For many, navigating different rules in a different language would require hiring personnel specifically for this one task.

Not a fan of the matte lip version so I hadn't paid attention to this mini. Great lip feel, not sticky. Nice nude for me.

Bill C65 is how our workplace already works!?!

Bill C65 is how our workplace already works!?!

We had an OHS inspection recently and were informed our work place violence policy (which also covers harassment) has to be clearly displayed, all incidents are already investigated and outside help offered. OTOH our office groups seems really uninformed with respect to all the health and safety initiatives we have.

One advantage of working for a multinational - even if they don't actually recognize Canada as a separate country like they do Mexico. I can see this being more difficult for small workplaces but they are also more likely to have unresolved problems.

This is a good opportunity to explore job opportunities. I hope the Canadian Forces booth is not central so people who are sensitive to military presence can avoid the area. It sound like the Canadian Forces reps will be sensitive to the situation. Booth rep is difficult at any time.

Being sedentary is not healthy. What contributes to high levels?

Big cross-sectional analysis of data. I wonder what kinds of results researchers would get from FitBit or Samsung Health data. With Samsung you can't manually add data and it would be a world wide collection. With FitBit you might get a wider range of economic classes due to the cost of the devices. In both cases you would get people motivated to move more.

Somewhat florid writing style but children do have the right to privacy, even from their parents. Teachers are busy. They are not going to spend time on an extracurricular project that students don't want. I'd be interested in attending a GSA meeting just to see if it matches my imagination. I think of it as kids getting together to plan/do a range of activities around people they don't have to be guarded with. Reading to playing cards to going to movies. But I don't know.

Lower rate in the US & tax international earnings.

From the article, tax restructuring seems needed as businesses become more global. It is supposed to promote spending to update machines that would help people be more productive. Of course economists are more about systems than people so the welfare of people isn't really mentioned other than people's wages should rise.

Audits and reviews rely on the questions asked and the metrics required.

Audits and reviews rely on the questions asked and the metrics required.

A group with police ties does not have to be lax on police violence and can promote change. If the audit parameters are written set by a wide group of stakeholders and the audit reviewed by non-officers who can do spot checks there is room for continuous improvement. But only if the departments are held accountable for change.

A couple of questions I would have off the bat is whether the proportion of arrests match the population demographics and the charges are consistent across all the arrests. One big question is the goal of policing. Jailing people for breaking windows does not seem like a good use of resources.
