We're old enough to call it retirement.

We're old enough to call it retirement.

I totally get where this person is coming from. Sometimes it just takes one event to push the balance off into a lost place. The routes to self empowerment are many. For those who have lost high paying jobs, it can be depending on a lower wage earner while waiting for jobs they are "owed" that may never come back. For others, it's saving to take that step off the merry-go-round of earning and debt. Regardless, you will be hemorrhaging money. That's the price of stepping off.

I want to say I got this from Annette Holland but couldn't find her comments.

Edit - found it on Medium through their newsletter.

This is actually a great idea for de-escalating. We've also stopped talking from another room, an easy habit to get into when it's just 2 people in a house. Calling can sound like yelling when you're sensitive about something.

It's the government's role to regulate. On citizen's behalf. That's why we elect them.

From the article Wouldn't there be a backlash against government intervention in those investments? Uh no. The government is regulating investments and business practices all the time. When investor activity adversely affects non-investors, especially in core areas like housing, people expect protections. Look where investor greed got most of the G20 countries in 2009. For sure the government should consult all stake holders but most people expect their government to work for them not corporations. It corporations role to figure out how to profit under the rules.

It's a completely FREE application, with no ads. If you know anyone struggling with anxiety or depression, I would appreciate if you could share this post!

Here's the link to the Mood Triggers App in the Google Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nick.moodtriggers.anxietyanddepressionapp&hl=en

New CC to use Samsung Pay? Not if CIBC.

New CC to use Samsung Pay? Not if CIBC.

I was thinking today of getting the credit card necessary to use Samsung Pay just because access. Found out it's CIBC and just no. I was with CIBC as a youth. They gave such poor customer service to my student loan (basically treated me like an criminal to be) that I left the bank. Had there been more social media at the time I would have touted every interest bearing financial transaction I negotiated with not them. I know I can totally use their money by paying off entire balance just before the payment date but I don't want them to make any money from me.

No I don't hold grudges - why do you ask LOL

A reminder on why the age of your candidate matters.

A reminder on why the age of your candidate matters.

I'm 56 and things have changed a lot in my life time. I've been buffered from many of them because we are childless it's easier to accumulate wealth. We've also been lucky in avoiding layoffs where we couldn't overcome loss in income but our neighbours have not always been as fortunate.

Now take someone like Trump, who matured in a tumultuous time and had the wherewithal to exploit systems for his benefit and his wealth insulated him from updating any worldviews. He's nostalgic for the 70s because he wasn't affected by river fires and his money (again) buffered him from economic downturns.

When he thinks swamp he thinks (uppity) blacks and immigrants followed by poor people who don't "know their place". Small business owners, including farmers, are there to be exploited by big business.

Are you chasing your tail instead of being productive?

I like to keep busy - for work this means doing lots of tasks rather than taking the time to explain and share the work load. I've had a lot of continuous education about the roles I play so mostly it's learning software to capture my work. When I was a supervisor I managed worker jobs so there should be 20% of time available for equipment maintenance /repair. Most days it was quick maintenance so you weren't crushed. I don't think the supervisor has the luxury of integrating that buffer now.

Name the people making these corporate decisions.

Name the people making these corporate decisions.

It's pretty easy to hide your antisocial tendencies when creating policy. By default you make a lot of money and you aren't really judged on good performance but your reputation for performance. And your rich buddies go along with it because they aren't affected. The poorer people are swayed by your reputation or willing to take the lumps.

Since people who pay for seats have the bizarre naive expectation of getting a seat, perhaps that 10% pure profit should be standby seating at a marginally lower fair - no carry on, pay for each bag in the hold and no guarantee you will get on the flight. It's a win, you don't have to bribe passengers to leave the flight,; you could put up front that they can be removed from the plane! People get the flexibility you tout.

BTW I answer 1 million dollars with Delta. I have places I want to be.

I fly Air NZ and dread the AC flight legs.

I fly Air NZ and dread the AC flight legs.

Why is it so hard to have 2 simple bump rules in this time of computer bookings? DON'T BUMP tickets holders booked on same credit card and customers with connecting flights. Guess who are least likely to "value flexibility". If Air Canada wanted to ensure they ruin any holiday zen they've certainly hit on the perfect method. And it's unlikely the flight crew or gate personnel are vindictive jerks in their personal lives; these decisions have to be stressful for them. This is all board and upper management - people who are very unlikely to encounter bumping because they fly private jet or always get priority. Overbook based on statistics? OK but being smart about it.

I've gone a step further than not booking AC unless absolutely unavoidable. I also don't invest in AC either through stock or mutual funds. Since they are no longer a crown corp I'm not financially supporting them.

I agree with clear labeling of positions and best interests guidance.

Fred and I are very different investors. He's a buyer beware person and I'm an informed consent person. Those are different because the former is much more dependent on personal education. He's also much more hands on. I let my stuff ride for a long time (usually a couple years before I expect to use the money) before I check on it.

I have no problem with everyone making money from investments and even the advisor/manager making extra - after all they are doing the active work. And I definitely accept losses BUT I don't accept a loss while the advisor/manager roll in the cash. Then there's a HUGE incentive for them to rip me off.

We've never used a someone you pay for the service although we do invest in mutual funds and now ETF and stock. I've been very happy with our IG service and very aware of how the fund fees are loaded. It's complicated and if it's not going to be well regulated, there has to be way more consumer education.

If you want to address illegal immigration - these are the types of people to target.

There seems to be an idea that groups of immigrants just "find" a boat and go off to a new country intending to break laws. In reality there are businesses who make their profit from misleading desperate people out of their life savings. Those business rarely take any risk, the customers take all the loss. Those businesses should be the focus of the justice system.

Eye Surgery, commonplace now but so life changing.

Eye Surgery, commonplace now but so life changing.

I had vision correction 20 years ago, LASIK in one eye and implanted lens in the other. The desire for vision correction was very high, I had been thinking about it for 10 years. Once I decided to go ahead, I really was at the mercy of the doctor and the information the clinic gave me as part of consent. Fortunately I went to a high quality clinic which a good record of success. Success = vision improvement, no infections. I was an early adopter for the implanted lens and did feel like I was paying to be part of a late stage research program but I accepted it. Recently I had cataract surgery that replaced the implanted lens.

Vision is something humans are loathe to lose so ensuring the patient understand the risks in imperative. The facility providing the health care should be ranking any negative outcome as the highest severity.

Have always considered the Catholic school system a waste of resources.

Have always considered the Catholic school system a waste of resources.

Where I grew up (BC) we had 1 school system. Any religious stuff was Sunday school or private. In Alberta there's at minimum twice the cost in terms of buildings and administrative costs plus the catholic school board get public and church money. This is coming a head because they are fighting against LGBT clubs and health education includes information about reproduction and sexualizing. How can teachers (and their administrators) be unaware of the difference between education and training?

To top it off, the catholic aka separate school system has more legal administrative costs in spite of having religious requirements for teachers and students.
