I have been fighting the urge to get a new Windows tablet. I prepared for retirement upgrading most of my tech in 2017 then getting a keyboard for my tablet. It doesn't feel like enough.

About those truckers around Alberta

I could not be a politician. People in Southern Alberta vote conservative. They got a hospital expansion, new windmills funded by the carbon tax and a cannabis growing facility is under construction. Guess who they will vote for again.

Just when I started to get concerned

 Green announcement 1,000 jobs
Very glad AB government not pandering to just one energy sector; they are also brokering deals for the future. Building jobs and looking to the future is a core government function in a capitalist democracy. Renewable energy is the future. During the transition we must support oil of course, hence rail cars, increased refining and reminding the federal government to get the expansion for that pipeline they bought approved.

I tried having a conversation about the trucker deal on Wednesday - everyone at exercise  seemed to think it was awesome. I asked questions like - isn't oil still flowing through the existing pipelines, isn't pipeline construction also stopped in the US and the best one - the pipeline expansion wouldn't kick in immediately so I don't get it. Then I read this and was reminded by Perfesser Dave

... Alberta’s not mad because the Conservatives didn’t build their pipeline, which they think they need, but they are mad because the Liberals are going to build it, but they want the Liberals to build it anyway, and they’re even madder because the Liberals are propping up their industry until the pipeline is finished, even though they say the industry needs propping up, and the pipeline they want isn’t going to make any difference when it’s finished...

Yes, people are hurting now but really - oil has been in flux since I moved to Alberta in the 80s. It's why I made sure if hubby worked in oil field, I did not. So far oil service companies have been hit for last 4 years after a soft bounce back from 2009. What is their business plan?

And truly, there is a pretty significant group of Albertans who would be happy to join the US; live the prosperity version of the bible, destroy the environment, stuff non-hetero people into a closet or send them to "the farm" with the unwanted pets and get rid of the newer immigrants who do the jobs they are paid to do.

Bennie and the Glove

Now that Bennie is over six months old and is pretty solid with his house training, we've decided to make his space a little larger. This introduces new training spaces because what applies in the kitchen may not - in his mind - apply any where other than the kitchen. We continue to be lucky as he hasn't really figured out he could jump over the barrier. He's our first dog we haven't encouraged to jump up on chairs or the bed. Instead we use "up" and lift him up. All his jumping is getting down.

Importing from Google+ using Friends+ Me tool

Friends+ Me has made an easy to use exporter tool that grabs posts and comments so it can be imported to Blogger (and WordPress) It is free to use for up to 3000 posts; after than you can accept truncated data or pay for more. Go to their post on exporting in the G+ migration community for download information.

If you like to be more handsy - download the dropbox files.
Step 1
download all the files from the link
Step 2
click on the exe file to install. If you get a warning, click the small print to run anyway

Step 3
Launch the exporter, it will look for your G+ account. You may have to log in manually by entering your email and password
Step 4
Select the files you want to export and the format you will want for importing. You can export your entire feed or just collections. I know a lot of my stuff is time sensitive.
Step 5
Open Blogger, Under settings, select other. Import Content will be at the top. Navigate to your saved file and select it.
Step 6
A window will launch and show it is working to convert files. I left the window open but once the file has been uploaded, I'm pretty sure it's like google check out and all the work is being done on the server. I told it to auto publish and the posts were nicely sorted by dates.

If you were using Friends+Me for sharing posts across social media feeds, it will use the headline as the post title. It also does some tags automatically. I wish I had been better about using the collection name as the hashtag but I don't want to expand my visibility that much....

I'm back and I'm retired!

I looked up retirement blogs and they mostly seem to be about money or exotic vacations or something unusual the retirees are doing that aren't really relatable to most people. We thought of traveling; going to Australia for F1 or going to the UK for metal detecting but in the end we got a puppy. Between Bennie and Milo hanging in there at over 16 we just feel like staying closer to home for now. What to do with our time? We had a lot planned that would keep us busy for quite awhile. Almost none of it went as planned. I had thought the recovery would be like it was for 2009. This town bounced back pretty quickly. Not so after the oil price collapse a few years ago.

We had planned to sell the house and move to the West Coast. We did put the house up for sale but when we went to the Coast we found we had the choice of retiring or having a house on the West Coast soooo we pulled the house from the market and did some upgrades; updated the flooring upstairs installed storm doors and changed the kitchen door swing. We have some other #HomeProjects planned that I'll update in this space. We also did some stuff I had been putting off - like dropping the landline and culling our cable line up.

The dogs are a pretty big deal. We're trying to do all positive training with Bennie so that takes a lot of time. He's already been in one class and we're doing the 30 day training series with Zak George to keep me on track with training. Add in cranky Milo and our hands are full.

When we're not leaving town I expected my exercise routine the be settled but after 21 years, NRG4LIFE can't find a venue so I'm doing a new activity - Spin. Did I ever mention I'm not that into bikes? It's very aerobic. I felt like throwing up part way through the first class. I'm better now...and I bought shoes.

Traditionally I send everything to my dad's house and later in the day the rest of the family shows up, unwraps then can't figure out who got what. Except for the year I shopped early and left gifts only to have them forgotten until I called. I find all those scenarios super annoying. So to let that go, I am trusting tracked parcels. Once it gets to the household, I don't care if they throw it it the garbage, at least they got them to dispose of.

It's an expensive option but it's worth it for my piece of mind.

It's all relative. If you accept torture as reasonable or value money over lives you'll accept the assurances. Why torture as a red line? There are already reports 2 of the activists have been tortured. There was a time humanity seemed to agree on what torture was and that it was unacceptable. The US removed that line.

Vet care has changed for "tutoring". Bennie came home with 3 days of pain killer and a cone.

Actually Bennie was really good about licking, he only had to wear the cone for part of a day. He didn't seem to be in pain but I followed instructions just in case. He also got a chip in case he gets lost. He also got a tag with a bar code scan for quicker access to info.

In other news, Bennie's puppy class is done and we're taking on some different training tasks. Doing much more with "leave it" because he gets very bitey if we try to take things away when they're in his mouth. The spray of treats that Zak George recommends is great for getting stuff back. Also working on him not jumping all over us when we lie on the floor (ie abs). Now he sits and waits for a treat when I do it. Perfect!

Really can't believe house training this time around. Duffy ended up wearing pee pants because we just couldn't get compliance all the time. Bennie doing really well at letting us know when he needs to go out - and it isn't often for peeing/pooping. Pretty sure he'll have the run of the upstairs by the time he's 1 which is nice.

Does it have to be said the only time to have sex at work is if you are a sex worker? Maybe on a break but even then...

On days like today, it's hard to regret retiring and staying where we are.

People ask us how we are liking retirement and I think they're really asking what we do with all that time now we're not working. Well we just don't rush from one thing to the next. Breakfast is leisurely. Puppy training happens daily. We've committed to walking every day (I will bail on freezing rain though) even if it's too cold for the dogs. After all Fred used to snowmobile at -35C. And we've committed to reducing our carbon footprint further by getting an off grid greenhouse and replacing bark with leafy plants.

Should be exciting.

Seriously Alberta needs to reset. Calgarians are smart, educated people. They need to see oil is not the wave of the future - especially with US fracking making the US the top oil producer world wide. We should concentrate on refining and supplying gasoline for Canada while exporting extra but really focus on developing solar and wind generated electricity to drawing energy hungry industries here. Also, a sea change in attitude about "men's jobs" would be helpful. We need journeymen plumbers, carpenters etc but also caregivers and other service providers.

These "people" felt comfortable posting video of animal torture on the internet. Kudos to the guy who reported it.

Because I'm human, my first thought was they should be treated as they treated the coyote. Bash head a few times against the back of a machine them drag them behind a vehicle after they try to run away. Then my humanity kicked in. Now I think they should be made to eat that animal. Raw. The whole thing in one sitting. Killing is not for sport, it's for survival. Coyotes eat small animals, vegetation and carrion.

I really regret reading the account. The pictures were disturbing enough that I went with just a headline

We went through end of the roll to get new flooring and used their contractor. Overall it looks ok but the finish is not what I expect from a professional. Glue was used on a no glue flooring and, with no premeasuring, there are little strips or triangles of fill in pieces rather than actual planned pieces. Sure the floor is warranteed but we would have to remove the baseboards again to get it done. When we hire professionals we expect that last 5% of the work to be as good as the easiest 80% of the job.

The clickbait headline doesn't give this complex article enough credit for the themes explored.

This is a very long and complex read. I went in thinking it's probably due to sex-ed and consent. Along the way I read about how use it or lose it applies to women and men when it comes to sexual activity. You can tell I'm old because if you asked me about rules for the first time I wouldn't even dream of the leading sex researcher's advice of “don’t choke them, don’t ejaculate on their face, don’t try to have anal sex with them. These are all things that are just unlikely to go over well.”

I also get the fear factor for women. It's pretty clear that existing culture sees violent men as coin of the realm and some women will be sacrificed. Who wants to be that woman? You can't tell ahead of time who the violent guy is and you are most likely to get killed as you try to extricate yourself from the situation. Is sex worth it?

Mostly I am amazed at the effect social media/intern life has disrupted relationships in wealthier countries. People have always been cliquey but now they can be even more discerning without leaving the comfort of wherever they are.

I am very confused about the use of the word liberal to describe increasing early childhood education and roads quality.

Even describing quality levels for public funding as a liberal cause seems WTF. These are taxes we all pay, surely we want the best bang for our buck so yes, research needs to be funded to present to stakeholders so a decision can be made for effective use of funds as well as some kind of goal expectation.

Even though I'm pissed to be part owner of the Trans-Mountain pipeline over all I think my tax dollars are being spent pretty well but not perfectly. I would definitely like to see more affordable/low income housing available and better use of innovation to make northern communities less reliant on imported foods. Expanding communication infrastructure to allow distance work and health care would also reinvigorate smaller communities. Alberta should focus on exporting electricity from alternate energy sources and natural gas rather than flogging the oil horse.

Nothing will bring back the dead and little will speed the healing of grief. We, as taxpayers, pay for the housing of these criminals. They should provide the invaluable work of caring for the disenfranchised. They can build housing, clean, care for and otherwise be (hopefully) made to see the humanity of others. They also learn skills for post sentencing that could help them become productive members of our communities.

Disrupting violent rhetoric is key. Perhaps the only way forward for that is to randomly assign avatars to each user when logging on to any corporately held networks that provide public services or every 24 hours. People would be known by their content. This distributes the likelihood of being a target as well as being the bully. Leaders of companies and countries would have to spend a week in VR as the least valued of their community. Asocial people thrive in a capitalist world, they need to live with what they have wrought.

PACs are illegal in Alberta. The UPC is very willing to break donations laws - what kind of leadership would they provide?

If you want to know what the current government has accomplished in Alberta you only need to look at what the PAC is funding. This is the platform the UPC is running on Roll back a 0.5% tax increase, roll back equitable wages for servers and freeze for everyone else, scrap the carbon tax which has very defined in spending, roll back labour benefits like health and safety legislation protections and WCB benefits. Oh and remove car dealerships consumer protections since this is a car dealership group doing this illegal activity. Additional platform stands will also remove protections for LBGQT+ people under the guise of "Religious Freedom"

Carbon tax is a conservative think tank idea. Pay for use makes sense for capitalist countries. Call it a fee instead.

Alberta has carbon tax with rebates. It has websites, sent out postcards and did all it could to inform people how the money was to be spent. I'm pretty sure Fred is representative of a voter. He keeps saying he doesn't know where they money is going in spite of me telling him each time he makes that comment. 'rents-in-law get rebates because they are on a fixed income. Their city has used the money to build windmills. They insist paying for carbon use is unfair even though they benefit from it.

I give up on people.

Fred had a dentist appointment today. After decades of getting up at 5:30 we now have no schedule and start the day around 7 with let dogs out and feed them then groom and train Bennie before breakfast. We have an informal rule of no face to face meetings before 10.

When working full time, I tried to set aside quiet/isolation times for my productive periods of 10-12:30 or 1:30 to 4:30 (the afternoon worked less well because my day "ended" at 3). Site tours or conference call around 7:30 because less intensive. Knowing yourself and being able to isolate yourself, to me, seems much more realistic than spinning wheels while dosing yourself with caffeine just to get alone time.

Recommendation to write off the loan made to Conservatives who gave it. Can't admit straight up funneling of taxpayer $ to corps.

This is where the implementation of transparency plays into the hands of people who hate change. It gives them something to point at and holler about and there is no path of clarity for how the decision was made. Publically owned multi-corps seems to have figured this out with their anti-corruption policies but the US government (super "conservative" at the moment) seems to be all about hiding or obscuring decision making processes. Harder to undo damage.

On the good side our average wealth indicates the range between high and low saver is a little more equitable than some other countries. I would really like Canada to be more like Denmark in terms of equity. There's no real reason we couldn't be with our immigrations requirements for wealth and education. Even refugees - remember they are the wealthier ones who are forced to leave their home country due to circumstances beyond their control.

Peace, I really should be doing something other than being on line.

Tolerance is not a moral absolute; it is a peace treaty. Tolerance is a social norm because it allows different people to live side-by-side without being at each other’s throats. It means that we accept that people may be different from us, in their customs, in their behavior, in their dress, in their sex lives, and that if this doesn’t directly affect our lives, it is none of our business. But the model of a peace treaty differs from the model of a moral precept in one simple way: the protection of a peace treaty only extends to those willing to abide by its terms. It is an agreement to live in peace, not an agreement to be peaceful no matter the conduct of others. A peace treaty is not a suicide pact.

I'm not saying everything should be free but that people should feel comfortable doing things for the enjoyment rather than branding. I'm not a proponent of "your work should be your passion." I think you should do work you tolerate/enjoy so you can fund the activities you enjoy/are passionate about. That may be part of the culture I am part of. A friend was talking about her daughter's aspirations the other day. At 15, she wants to a be a pediatric surgeon (of something equally specific) so she can have defined working hours as a well paid job that will fund her writing.

I think it's a failure of the current implementation of capitalism that UBI is feared because of the idea people won't contribute to society because it implies all contributions can and should be monetized and those contributions that aren't monetized have not worth.

Being older makes it easy to fall behind in social sciences. Quick primer on Gender with definitions.

It's very difficult to counter arguments on the face that they don't "feel" right. Add to being pretty ok with my gender assignment from all aspects makes this is in no way my fight. I would like to treat all people as people and I would like all people to be treated the same with the same access to services and justice. I hesitate to point out that everyone who buys stuff pays taxes and gets services. Although that may happen in Canada Alberta and perhaps maybe only the town I live in, I don't feel that happens in the US for everyone.

That aside, I'm glad this research exists and definitions are in place so policies can be created that aren't needlessly cruel and invasive to specific segments of the population.

Conservative people have no concept of toxic masculinity because they consider masculine men to be barely restrained animals. Growing up I was taught being a responsible member of society meant rising above animal instincts. I missed the part about that only applying to girls...or did I. Lots of teen conflict stemmed from my younger brother not having a curfew while I had to be home by 9 because I could get pregnant. With no boys to be held responsible I definitely got the message that anything like that would be my fault and I would have to accept hearing about whenever as part of the ongoing support from my parents.

I've really enjoyed Plus and will continue to post. What I like about Plus is I don't have to boil myself down to one core interest or rely on friends/family for content. I've really enjoyed the range of topics users have rough to the table and the ability to reply/comment - but really just mostly read.

I'm on twitter - @cass_m - that feed is an echo of my GPlus so I'm not sure how active that will be.
I'm on Vero under my name - I don't know many people there and it's all phone based mobile so I'm not that active. The app is nice though and it echoes to twitter.
I'm on diaspora* - cass_m@plusphora.com. From what I understand it's a pod hosted by a couple of people. The test will be how well community guidelines are maintained. While I value opposing opinions, I want actually thoughts, not parroting of talking points. I curate my feed here because I do.
I'm on mastodon thanks to Randy Resnick but I find it confusing and didn't get a good app.

My social feed does rely on ease of posting from my phone, tablet (gasp!) and Win 10 (this is not a debate about desktop OS).

Hope to see you around.

Yeah, we've all seen the news..
Goes like this.
Google fucked up.. or someone fucked up, there was a security breech...
It was repaired early this year.
So, to totally fix this security breech on Google Plus.. the masters at Google have decided to shut down the Plus by August next year, so nobody can access our data (Google already have everything, but they possibly don't wish to share with strangers)
All I see today is a choice..
A/ Start a petition to make Google keep the Plus. (ha, like that's going to happen)
B/ Rush around like a mad man desperately looking for somewhere else to congregate with all the people we met on Plus.
....................

Bottom line is.. choice A is a no brainer.. google doesn't give a shit, they already own your everything online.
Choice B .. you do not need to make that choice today, you have 10 long months to figure something out.

I do see a trend though.. fuck facebook never going there again.. Twitter? yeah, righto..... oh.. Pluspora

Alcohol is truly a public health issue. Much bigger social problem than cannabis to me. Binge drinking is condoned if not encouraged and alcohol heightens the likelihood of violence from a certain segment of the population. Add in the cost of drunk driving and alcohol related liver failure and other diseases and there are reasons other than "morality" to tightly control its availability.

There are tips you learn as you deal with money. Trusted friends help. Much nicer not to have to lose money and learn from your own mistakes.

Unfortunately money mistakes tend to be costly and can be difficult to recover from. Even getting budgeting tips from friends can be helpful.

From the article:
people avoid discussing money with their friends for four reasons: 1) They’re afraid of sounding stupid; 2) They were taught that it’s rude; 3) They suspect they have more money than their peers and don’t want to be resented for it; or conversely, 4) They worry they have less money than their peers and will be pitied.

And tips
starting with a compliment...They might deflect your compliment at first (“Oh, hardly!”), but reiterate your genuine curiosity

I read a report of a study that said pretty well everyone is anxious about money regardless of income. I suggest skipping talk of numbers and focusing on strategies.

Even with the weather and we see the benefit of remaining in a community we've been a member or for 20 years. and have a pretty balance retirement investment portfolio so I don't expect growth to really change.

If there was a way to process on ships the transport to end user that would be way better than traipsing all over the world with garbage.

Interestingly Vietnam is one of the non-state (?) countries and Canada are already in the process of ratifying a free trade agreement with them as part of the TPP v2. It probably isn't a bad thing to examine any deal with China closely and the more eyes the better; companies can do their own negotiating.

Interesting that the expoliticians can manage to sound like reasonable non-partisan actors. Most seem to have gone to law firms and universities not lobby groups.

One neat ergonomics tip - mouse with left hand. Don't know why I didn't start doing this sooner!

One neat ergonomics tip - mouse with left hand. Don't know why I didn't start doing this sooner!

This works so well for me. I find my right shoulder is often fatigued enough that poor mouse placement gets noticeably annoying. Using my left hand, I can write notes, drink stuff and reach for all the stuff right hand people put in easy reach of their ... right hand!

People often ask why women who get the deluge of violent threats why they don't just leave the internet. It's because the support from others outweighs the troll attacks. I read some forums where people ask for advice on creating a life where they can be content. Pretty sure they are heavily moderated. For me they are more like mental preparation for events but it also opens my eyes to some of the more difficult situations people encounter. I find the most consistent commenters don't tell the OP what they must do; they ask questions to help the OP come to a decision - leave, get IRL help for realistic coping strategies, etc.

I've heard of advances that would create antibodies based on a different part of the virus that is less changing so new vaccines don't have to be developed every year. Needle don't particularly both me but it would be easier for people to maintain immunity. No one really has time for colds with their 7 days of symptoms. The addition of GI symptoms is something I just don't need.

This retirement year we've done renos and bought a second vehicle and it's only September! Actually, I'm kidding about the conversion. We're still in the retirement setup stage. Next year will tell the tale.

Hopefully this isn't written in a gendered manner. Men should be protected from harassment from women and other men.

At the emergency management conference I was at, a colleague was mentioning how stunning it is that people consider rail less hazardous and more environmentally friendly than pipelines. On going CO2 emissions from locomotives running on mostly non-bio diesel because of temperature restraints so there is NOX and SOX as well. Rail also runs through middles of cities and close to residential areas. I have to agree. Perhaps there is a false sense of security because rail cars only holds 114,000L (30,000 US gal) and people think incidents would be confined to 1 car?

The most important part is probably that the US comes first in the name. And will likely still be an attempt to tariff auto parts. It seems either Ontario keeps cars or Ontario and Quebec keep dairy. Tough call.

We both made "hey, let's try making" foods this weekend from our vegan Asian stocked kitchen. Perogies and risotto.

Yesterday Fred made Perogies stuffed with potato masala. Perogy dough is easy to make vegan. He just substituted the egg with ground flax and a little extra water. He could have also used some oil. I find this style of using potato masala hide the flavour of the masala too much but that may just be due to how much chutney I use😉.

Risotto substitution was only the rice. We have Jasmine and Basmati and I chose the shorter grained of the two. Key with Risotto is patience. Toasting rice can't be rushed and I used the same cook time (~45 minutes) I use for rice pudding. Success! I think I'll make this more often. And roasted veg cannot be overrated. Just don't drown them in oil.

The key to all this stuff is time - well and learning some cooking techniques which is also time.

If we want to stop bullying and mob attacks we have to encourage children to choose to leave uncomfortable situations. We must support their bucking of peer pressure.

If we want to stop bullying and mob attacks we have to encourage children to choose to leave uncomfortable situations. We must support their bucking of peer pressure.

Fred and I were talking about the rumour that Dr. Ford's father would not support her by saying he believed she had been a survivor of sexual assault because it would jeopardize his standing at his golf club. Fred just could not believe a father would not support a child even if he didn't support the adult. I said that's why she didn't report it as a teen but just dealt with it. He flat out said parents don't treat their children like that.

We've both never been without parental support. I was drawn to Fred's family just because they were so clearly supportive. I had a much more contentious relationship with my parents in my teens, but in the end, they were always there for me regardless of how much they disapproved of what I was doing. I've seen what happens when parents don't. I guess Fred hasn't.

Companies have records retention policies, why shouldn't Gov't set those for citizens to invoke de-listing on request?

Companies have records retention policies, why shouldn't Gov't set those for citizens to invoke de-listing on request?

I do think the info should still be available for the appropriate people the access. We've always had sealed records and there have always been people who can be contacted in person should the need arise. The problem I see with the current free-for-all is people aren't given the tools for neutral fact checking.

I could use Kavenaugh as an example. He didn't grow up on the internet yet information is still there. School year books, very popular before the internet age, did capture people's activities and reputations from the peer perspective (at least at my high school where I worked on it.) From those reputations you can see how people have progressed. He had a letter from the American Bar Association with ethical concerns 12 years ago and another released in the last week. Most of this information was not on the internet.

I'm not sure how free speech plays into delisting. Is it a fear that people will be able to say things without consequence? How is that different than the people who tell victims of online bullying to just get off the internet?
