A new deal😮 I can't wait to hear how the US dairy quota and subsidy system is changing to allow more Canadian products. Oh I have that backwards...

The most important part is probably that the US comes first in the name. And will likely still be an attempt to tariff auto parts. It seems either Ontario keeps cars or Ontario and Quebec keep dairy. Tough call.

We both made "hey, let's try making" foods this weekend from our vegan Asian stocked kitchen. Perogies and risotto.

Yesterday Fred made Perogies stuffed with potato masala. Perogy dough is easy to make vegan. He just substituted the egg with ground flax and a little extra water. He could have also used some oil. I find this style of using potato masala hide the flavour of the masala too much but that may just be due to how much chutney I use😉.

Risotto substitution was only the rice. We have Jasmine and Basmati and I chose the shorter grained of the two. Key with Risotto is patience. Toasting rice can't be rushed and I used the same cook time (~45 minutes) I use for rice pudding. Success! I think I'll make this more often. And roasted veg cannot be overrated. Just don't drown them in oil.

The key to all this stuff is time - well and learning some cooking techniques which is also time.

If we want to stop bullying and mob attacks we have to encourage children to choose to leave uncomfortable situations. We must support their bucking of peer pressure.

Fred and I were talking about the rumour that Dr. Ford's father would not support her by saying he believed she had been a survivor of sexual assault because it would jeopardize his standing at his golf club. Fred just could not believe a father would not support a child even if he didn't support the adult. I said that's why she didn't report it as a teen but just dealt with it. He flat out said parents don't treat their children like that.

We've both never been without parental support. I was drawn to Fred's family just because they were so clearly supportive. I had a much more contentious relationship with my parents in my teens, but in the end, they were always there for me regardless of how much they disapproved of what I was doing. I've seen what happens when parents don't. I guess Fred hasn't.

Companies have records retention policies, why shouldn't Gov't set those for citizens to invoke de-listing on request?

Companies have records retention policies, why shouldn't Gov't set those for citizens to invoke de-listing on request?

I do think the info should still be available for the appropriate people the access. We've always had sealed records and there have always been people who can be contacted in person should the need arise. The problem I see with the current free-for-all is people aren't given the tools for neutral fact checking.

I could use Kavenaugh as an example. He didn't grow up on the internet yet information is still there. School year books, very popular before the internet age, did capture people's activities and reputations from the peer perspective (at least at my high school where I worked on it.) From those reputations you can see how people have progressed. He had a letter from the American Bar Association with ethical concerns 12 years ago and another released in the last week. Most of this information was not on the internet.

I'm not sure how free speech plays into delisting. Is it a fear that people will be able to say things without consequence? How is that different than the people who tell victims of online bullying to just get off the internet?

At my previous workplace, there were a lot of areas where there was noise so visual alerts were implemented but that is much more difficult for province or nation-wide alerts. I notice that the last Amber alert included vibration and screen on...which brings up the issue of visually impaired people. Perhaps the notice could be read out loud by default with a silent dismissal acknowledgement for the those with visual acuity.

I can't see this working for low wage or service industry workers. I'm guessing they skip the retire stage.

Since retiring I've been busy doing all the stuff I didn't have time to do well while I was working. Granted some of this is one off but there are a lot of repetitive tasks that go into daily life. Fred actually gained an appreciation for stay at home parents as his days filled with home maintenance and caring for a senior dog who doesn't like him. Plus we have options. We can work but don't have to work so we can set limits on hours. And let's talk about that gig economy. Once you are wealthier, you can tap into much different pay scale for those gigs. Upper management and chair holders don't suddenly end up in minumum wage part time jobs. Their connections find things for them - even in new careers.

So sounds good but isn't realistic for, I'm guessing, those people with less than a year salary saved. And that's a lot of people

The comments are interesting for this post ranging from statistics about health concerns to some dweeb talking about undesirable women "gaming" the system🙄 I really think biological donors are way over emphasised. Sure for genetic conditions it's important but barring health concerns, the people who support you from childhood to adulthood are your parents. Families can be problematic but it has nothing to do with genetic ties and everything to do with personalities and child raising techiniques. To dump them in favour of some biological contributor you didn't meet until adulthood seems heartless.

And I say this as a someone who thought they were adopted as a small child (not because I wanted to be royalty) and didn't have a particularly smooth adolescence.

When I worked in a lab, we always had music on, random pop hits or maybe crossover. No country. As time has gone on I prefer to work in silence if I have to do any thinking at all. At work I think it's important not to wear earphones because it can dull communication and create isolation instead of team work. We moved the radio so it could only be heard in certain areas that weren't in use for all tasks.

I really cut back drinking when DUI limits go so stringent. It made me think of just how much I could disrupt other people's lives (and my own of course) Side issue is I don't metabolise alcohol that well so by 100mL (3 shots) I'm pretty done. Perhaps people with an exaggerated level of fear for personal safety and/or belief in conspiracy theories shouldn't be able to acquire them. I don't understand the resistance to registering a firearm when it is purchased. We do it with cars. If firearm registration returned we would either register or sell the long guns we have. Seems like there are some influential male tennis officials who really resent Williams' success - especially since she didn't quit after giving birth.

There are a lot of people who tolerate successful women because they think they'll be out of the "success pool" after they either get married or start a family. Do they think the spouse or co-parent will put a stop to the atypical behaviour or successfully competing? Successful women are unlikely to marry someone who will stifle their personality.

Williams is correct, she may pay the price but other women will see/hear her response and it seems many male players will support them as well.

It is stunning to me that in Alberta being bondable is not a requirement for apartment manager and/or that sexual assault or domestic violence isn't enough to prevent being bondable. And, of course, an insurance company would not cover this type of incident. It's pure negligence on the part of the property management company regardless of law requirements. Perhaps now that the assailant is in jail Marri Properties will act; it certainly makes her case stronger.

Exactly why there is no abortion legislation in Canada. There are no ...laws “that the government has power to make over the male body?” . It's accepted that humans make decisions about themselves.

Funny how men can be as selfish or generous with their body as they want but women have no choice.

I enjoy how different authors are expanding on the theme of human/android melding. We've come a long way from the Borg.

Even when a treatment is overwhelmingly successful it's important to understand why. Prevention is so much more effective than trying to overcome symptoms and spreading of disease.

Fascinating that only ONE treatment for smallpox is available and scientists aren't certain what made smallpox vaccination so effective since live vectors were used.

Those tariffs are driving up costs and losing US jobs. Distance is no longer the problem it once was except... Vancouver is such a shit show as a working port. Constrained in a city that wants to be pretty. Rail yards, jammed with nowhere to expand. Marine traffic through an whale pod ground in a time when we are hesitant about decimating species (and rightly so). Unfortunately expanding markets would be through a western port.

It will be nice to be home after more than a month. Apparently I haven't worn out my welcome as dad seems sad we are leaving.

I admit, I watch Border Security: Canada's Front Line. I understand it's edited but overall CBSA seems effective & professional. I hope privacy issues can be worked out.

I think it does a good job of clarifying rules, how they apply and penalties. And bring a reality show gives an aura of authenticity that people (hopefully) find absent when watching a drama. The episode I found must fascinating was where a cargo was checked and sawdust indicated insects so the container was quarantined.

I've skipped a couple seasons but always end up coming back. And the actors are so engaging at conventions I can watch the YouTube videos of their panels for hours.

The guys really listen and take the time to answer questions and the fans are very respectful at least in the videos. All the other actors are also engaging on panels. It will be sad when the Ernie's ends.

This is an old favourite. I'm surprised to recognize themes in the story that are in the news today. "We need a 'itler" was a casual statement that stood for conservative roles and, spoiler, the culprit is driven by toxic femininity.

For me the graph of incidence of cancer mortality vs mobile cellular subscriptions show the consensus to be reasonalbe. If it's a carcinogen, it's very weak. The article mentions coverage in case of accidents but I think tele-medicine for low access area will be crucial for providing cost effective service. Fear mongering could result in patients resisting wearables that can help monitor treatment effectiveness.

Fence painted, check. Shed cleaned up and stuff stored in it rather than under the deck - check. Garage made habitable for daily driver - sadly check. Sadly because that means Dad can't do his hobbies any more. Fred and my brother went on a dump/recycle run. When Dad's wife gets back she can do any reorganizing she wants. Along the way we ended up buying Dad a new lawn mower and doing some front yard work.

It's time to go home.

As the new school year starts: faculty, be kind, students, focus and do your best. Neither student or faculty should hesitate to use the phrase "teaching and learning styles don't mesh" and pursue other options if possible.

I've been a privileged student - learning through high school came pretty easy; a poor student - immaturity and poor study skill made first tech diploma way harder than it should have been; and a motiviated honours student - second tech diploma and undergrad degree by distance learning. Through it all I had good instructors who seemed fair but that could be because I'm a fairly open person.

The way you are treated by instructors (or employers for that matter) shouldn't rely on how well you fit socially but it does. Back in the day, I think teachers/instructors/faculty were relatively well paid, respected and students accepted a more authoritarian style of learning. Instructing has changed - especially for adult students. Lots more competition for attention and with the deluge of information you really need to connect the dots for people. I think respected teachers/instructors/profs always did.

Education should be a win-win.
