The “Insert Here” Awards, and Trying to Keep SF/F Perpetually 12 Years

I read the original post on blackgate and all the comments. The thing that REALLY struck me is how the OP seemed hesitant to lay his interpretation of a character in the story (Locked In) in case it didn't fit later. As a young girl reading Norton, Clarke, Asimov et. al that was de rigeur. Why read speculative fiction if it was going to be the same old, same old. I wouldn't be a real fan in his world I guess.
