Do you take your ethics with you when you shop? It's hard with globalization but doable.
I used to worry about companies I work for being in business in China because of their human rights record. But questionable business practices can happen closer to home and are worth not supporting. Do your research.

Always shop ethical. Even if it means I'm paying more for the same product. My primary gotos are to companies who support their employees and their families.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard. I avoid Sony, Apple, Microsoft, a few drug companies, and a bunch more. These huge corporations own so many other things now though that it's so hard to avoid.
ReplyDeleteThere are many challenges to shopping ethically. First, you have to pay a premium to do so. Depending on how tight your budget is, that may be difficult. You also have to feel good enough about paying this premium time and time again.
ReplyDeleteLet's say, you do manage your budget and you feel good about your choice. You may be in a very small minority who choose to vote with their wallet. Just like third parties in most plurality electoral systems, your chance of making a difference may be negligible if most other people choose not to boycott those companies you do.
Gene Chiu Yep. A big part is spreading the word to other about why you think people shouldn't buy from certain companies. In many cases the 'premium' is avoided as well as sometimes it's quite easy just to do without something.
