Is the Pixel just for hard-core Google Android fans?
Sure some of the problems are hardware but most of them can be resolved with software updates. I've had several Samsung devices and never seen this kind of consistent problem except with users who root and ROM. Samsung may be late the the update game but at least their updates don't break a significant number of phones and their response to a true hardware problem was comprehensive. That's because their devices are made for consumers but ALSO frequently already include the features being added. The other OEMs are the same with their upgrade cycles, rarely do they have the breadth of issues reported.
Updates are not the be all and end all of devices. Apple AFAIK brings out one update with maybe a couple of small fixes a year. Their users also rarely complain about devices breaking on updating (again AFAIK) You want to play with the big boys you need reliability.

I live in a small Canadian Prairie city with a spouse and a dog. We retired in 2018. This is what life is like.

At the current prices, yes. $1200 for a phone is ... sheepish.
