Do not pay a damage deposit before seeing the rental unit.

This may seem pretty obvious but for people desperate for housing they can afford, it can be a step they overlook.

    Yeah, I've never understood why anyone would put money down before even SEEING the place. Crazy. But, so long as people fall for it, and scammers make money, they'll keep doing it. Doesn't cost them a dime. Well, maybe a few bucks for cheap burner phones...if they're even using phones and not doing it all by email.

    It's pretty common here in Vancouver too, I've heard. Desperation + lack of supply makes people do dumb things.
