Suzuki is a perfect recipient. U of A does groundbreaking sustainability research and so does U of C.
U of A can be energy neutral for a community of 12,000. Edmonton Waste Management has at least 4 waste streams that greatly reduce the city's waste footprint. U of C in Calgary has produced oil processing innovations that includes balls of bitumen and a leak proof pipeline design.
It's clear oil is going to be around for awhile. Research into using it in way that impacts the environment less, certainly in Canada, is due to Suzuki. He popularized science (The Nature of Things) for more than 1 generation. It's not surprising he's passionate. He's from Vancouver (also the starting place of Greenpeace)
