Locally (Butte County, California) it doesn't rain for 6-8 months every year in the summer & fall. I''ve noticed that wild grasses stay green longer in the partial shade provided by solar panel installations. There are lots of crops that would thrive here with less light & sun exposure while using less water.

The article linked reports on research combining solar panels with crops in matched field trials so that results can be quantified.

  1. In permaculture we call this "stacking functions." Lots of commonality with food forests and planting under trees.
