Macan is getting a garage buddy.

Macan is getting a garage buddy.

We figure we'll do a 36 month lease so we don't get stuck with old tech. The lakes we kayak at are in the 200km radius that will allow a round trip without running out of juice. Same with Fred's metal detecting. Since we're not moving, and both randomly working, we'll need a second vehicle. Hopefully by the time the Macan is 7 years or so there will be a hybrid available.

  1. I half read that and saw "garbage buddy" thinking you were getting something inside your car...

  2. Love our BMW i3. Hope you enjoy your EV. Lots of high speed public charging in Metro Vancouver, though.

  3. Ryan Moore I had to check I was a victim of autocorrect lol

  4. Breen Ouellette we'll probably mostly charge at home, maybe Edmonton occasionally.

  5. This is a strong contender for our next car, but for now the Leaf is doing great.

  6. We looked at the leaf. At the moment it's down to styling since this will be our first electric.

  7. Cool. Electric's big use right now is for larger centers. Out here in the sticks, where having to do an 800-1000km one day round trip can happen on short notice, range anxiety is real. And there are very few publicly accessible charging stations to be found. I think we have one ... at our Best Western.

Of course, with the price of gas these days ... and the price of electricity in Ontario ... I'm not sure how much electric would save someone here!!

  8. Don't know about electricity prices in Ontario, but in Vancouver we get 200 km of range with the i3 for just under $2.00.

  9. Ontario's hydro rates are the highest in the country. We were the highest in North America for a spell as well. Then the gov't rolled them back a little to try to buy votes in this month's election. The lost. (The election and official party status.) A lot of it was because of long term solar contracts they signed that paid people upwards of 80 cents/kWh for solar power. You can't pay that much without charging for it somewhere else ... our rates doubled in 10 years.

  10. Talk about poor planning! 80 cents!

  11. Breen Ouellette Tell me about it. Ontario Hydro has been SOOOOO horribly mismanaged it isn't funny. We'll be paying for it for generations.

  12. Chris Pollard we live just over 200 km from the nearest big center. Hopefully popular malls will have charge stations. The Hyundai is supposed to charge 80% in an hour. But that's why we're keeping the Macan - long distance cruising.

  13. Cass Morrison Makes sense. It would be nice to see even ONE of the big gas companies start including a fast charging station at their sites, coast to coast. That's the stuff that's needed to let electric vehicles take off. As they stand, they make sense as a second vehicle - or even a main vehicle for the day-to-day driving around town, to/from work, etc. But right now, it's pretty tough to count on electric for longer trips. Even 80% in an hour isn't quite as good as 100% in 5 minutes like filling the tank with gas.

I'd like to see more become of hydrogen. It's really the best of both worlds. Pretty quick fills, like gas, clean running like electric. But again ... infrastructure. It needs to be there before people will buy it, but nobody is going to build it until they're already a demand for it. It's going to take gas/diesel becoming SO unbelievably expensive that it would be worthwhile for the average Joe to make the switch. The way things are going, maybe we're on our way there.

I'm curious to see what you think of it once you've had a chance to live with it for a while.

  14. I don't know about other provinces, but in BC the sale of electricity is currently regulated as a monopoly/near monopoly of BC Hydro. This is why almost all the charging stations here are free. If you pay anything it is for the parking space (except for some limited trials run by BC Hydro).

You won't see fast chargers at gas stations until businesses other than electrical utilities can charge for delivery of electricity.

  15. I don't see why a gas/fueling station couldn't charge by the kWh for charging vehicles, just like they do for the gas. Someone charges them for the product (IE: BC Hydro) ... they're reselling it at a small markup. Maybe different for Ontario where 3rd parties can bill you for electricity delivered by Hydro One. Usually they're scam artists, is the only problem with it. Want to see your bills double? Sign on with one of those 'energy retailers.' Yeah ... good times for nobody there.

There does need to be something put in place to allow charging to become common and paid for though ... or the electric car market will ultimately be doomed to 'city car' status.

  16. No reason other than regulation. BC will need amendments to the law. Wouldn't surprise me if other provinces are in the same boat. Question is whether legislators will take the plunge.
