The steel & aluminum tariffs are illegal under NAFTA. Never forget why we need need to continue to get new trading partners.

Those tariffs are driving up costs and losing US jobs. Distance is no longer the problem it once was except... Vancouver is such a shit show as a working port. Constrained in a city that wants to be pretty. Rail yards, jammed with nowhere to expand. Marine traffic through an whale pod ground in a time when we are hesitant about decimating species (and rightly so). Unfortunately expanding markets would be through a western port.

  1. This should go under Captain Obvious. I stopped listening to what he says.

  2. As I mentioned elsewhere, perhaps that is what is needed to be done, for Canada to loudly and publicly call Trump out on his lies about NAFTA and trade with Canada. Then walk away from the table and throw the US into a major recession.

  3. In a negotiation course I took, one of the things I learned is to not be afraid to walk away from a deal.

  4. Larry C. Lyons Wouldn't that be like killing a neighbour's lawn (with herbicide) because they let weeds get out of control?

  5. Cass Morrison In this case there is every indication that tRump will only consider a deal where Canada concedes everything. There has been no compromise whatsoever on the Americans' part.

So the choice is between a deal which devastates the Canadian economy or a no deal which MAY devastate the Canadian economy.

Besides, remember Congress has to vote for cancelling NAFTA. At best if tRump sends the abrogation letter to Congress tomorrow, they have 90 days to vote on it. That happens after the November election. If done correctly the Canadian trade negotiators could delay any walkout etc until October 11, 2018. Then even if tRump sends that letter, it will be the new House deciding the issue. Chances are that Congress will have a Democratic party majority, and it is very doubtful they will cooperate with the Mango Mussolini.

Moreover, even if the NAFTA treaty is cancelled, the older CAFTA comes back into effect, as it was never cancelled.

  6. My impression of Trump is that he has no intention of negotiating a deal. He wants to just dictate the terms that we will abide by. If we agree to what Trump wants, it would set a bad precedent and any future negotiations any nation would think they can just walk all over us.

This NAFTA negotiation seems to be just Trump wanting to throw his weight around rather than finding a something that works for both parties. We need to simply walk away from any deal that is simply bad for us and this one appears to be bad for us in so many levels.
