On days like today, it's hard to regret retiring and staying where we are.

People ask us how we are liking retirement and I think they're really asking what we do with all that time now we're not working. Well we just don't rush from one thing to the next. Breakfast is leisurely. Puppy training happens daily. We've committed to walking every day (I will bail on freezing rain though) even if it's too cold for the dogs. After all Fred used to snowmobile at -35C. And we've committed to reducing our carbon footprint further by getting an off grid greenhouse and replacing bark with leafy plants.

Should be exciting.

  1. Bark actually helps get more carbon into the soil, where it will persist for quite some time in colder climates. But if you want to go big on sequestration, get some biochar and dig that into your soil.

  2. We aren't removing bark, just growing plants (we want instead of weeds) around it. We're going to be composting so many biochar can work into that?

  3. Cass Morrison Putting biochar into a compost pile is a win-win. Charges it up with all the microbial life and adds physical structure to the finished product.

  4. I am taking careful notes, as my retirement (at least semi-retirement) is coming in a few years. I like your mix of concern for the planet and personal enjoyment. That’s a good plan!

  5. I’m contrasting your off-grid progress with 22 years ago when retirees were coming to city council meetings I covered and complaining about the expense of adding recycling to their city services. Some very good changes!
