Bennie's first Kayak

It seems like project and kayak weather didn't come together until now. Last year he was really too little; this year I've been working with him on swimming (he's great at wading). The weather was forecasted to be nice so we tested Bennie's tolerance to life jackets. We each have a different colour so it's easy to know if they're all there*. Today the weather was nice so off we went to a nearby lake. Bennie wasn't in a kennel for the short trip. He sat on the backseat and took awhile to relax but he doesn't seem to mind motion. If Duffy wasn't in a kennel he curled up as far under the driver seat as possible. This was looking good for kayaking.

He can be quite hesitant about new things but the surroundings were so different that he forgot to be barky at the 'yaks. We got to practice U-turn when someone came by with a pup. He settled ok while I was paddling - then he saw a swimmer with a neon cap. He got so excited he fell in the water. I quickly fished him out and paddled him out of view. He was too excited for treats.

We did head back once Fred was in the water so we could all paddle together. Like Duffy, Bennie like everyone to be together - we may be getting a two person kayak. Even with the mirage drive it's hard to stay close together all the time. Bennie went over to Fred's 'yak while I got my mirage drive in place then came back over to me.
Most of the time we could use treats to calm him but he was pretty loud. Luckily on a Wednesday morning before school is out for the summer, there isn't a lot of people around. He barked at the floating water circulator (could be a FAD) and at random things but didn't bark at a speed boat or birds? We're using L-O-T-S of treats so he wants to go with us. Next time we'll go to a lake with fewer recreational lots.

*One time we had Milo's vest but not mine as they are the same colour.
A good time was had by all.

  1. Bennie's done something fun that I've never done. If I do go kayaking, I'd like him to give me tips on the sport!

  2. Bennie's tips - wear the right sized life jacket and treats make everything better.
