Do you have home insurance? Is it enough?

Do you have home insurance? Is it enough?

Ours is pretty comprehensive and every few years I go through to see if we have enough.

  1. I've found that with insurance, people think they're covered for things, when they actually aren't. IE: flooding Most people think they have a 'flood insurance' section of their homeowners policy that covers water in your basement. What many around us found last year was that it only covers flooding caused by sewer backup - NOT flooding from water coming through your foundation in some way. We were lucky (in a sense) that our backup WAS through the sewer lines and not just a leaking foundation. On the other hand, I'd have preferred if it was just relatively clean ground water that came into the basement .... Work starts on putting the walls back together next week. lol

And now that there's a claim, they've cut our future coverage fully in half, and I'm sure we'll be paying extra for the honour. Basically, it will only cover most of the cost of cleanup going forward, and not the actual restoration. We got hit pretty light, compared to some houses that had a full 7 feet of water crash in, right to the floor joists, but we'll be close to the $40k of coverage we had by the time the work is done to put it all back together.

  2. There was a big flooding episode here many years ago. We were ok because Fred is very diligent about leading water away from the house but others were not that lucky. Plus people think the government is going to fix their houses. nope.
