What a great breakthrough for safe sex!

What a great breakthrough for safe sex!

It's easy to denigrate medical breakthroughs on the basis they are risk reducers not risk eliminators. If effective, this would be a great non-invasive, protective delivery system.

Still, more research needs to be made for other STDs STIs and for term disabling of all gamete (ie sperm not simply preventing ovulation) production.

  1. People denigrate medical breakthroughs because they are risk reducers, not risk eliminators??? Really?

What medical breakthrough has ELIMINATED a risk? (Given that no treatment for anything is 100% effective, i'll go out on a limb and say "No treatment has ever eliminated a risk, but many risks have been reduced to the point where they can be considered very unlikely)

Any BTW, we call them STI's now, not STDs ,-)

Until we develop an effective HIV vaccine, and put reliable male contraception on the market, this is a good place holder, if it works as well as expected

  2. Rochelle uses a ring based contraceptive, and I have to say it's probably the most convenient method we've tried, with the least side-effects. So if they can add this anti-HIV action, I could see this becoming a spectacularly successful option for a lot of people. The trick is going to be keeping the price down.

  3. The general public, in the U.S. at least, believes in "cures" instead of risk reductions because we were brought along by fundraising TV ads by groups asking for donations with the strong suggestion that they could find "a cure" for the disease, most prominently cancer. "Cure" was the buzz word. Absolute causality, rather than correlation with diseases was communicated to us. Thus helped bring in money, but it mis-educated the public.

  5. I think most laypeople think of "cures". Or else why are we still talking about "the cure" for cancer when we now know cancer is many diseases and some of them can be treated into remission?(childhood leukemia for example).

  6. Precisely, Cass Morrison. We were continuing to subsidize tobacco and exempt cigarettes from FDA oversight, but constantly asking for money for a "cure" for cancer. The key word should have been prevention, rather than cure.

  7. That's what the tests and trials will tell us...

  8. Lesego Dineo the contraceptive portion is commercially available, tests and trials will evaluate the rest.

  9. I can confirm the contraceptive function works, and the safety factor seems remarkably good. The one we use is .. umm .. this one. https://www.nuvaring.com
