Unexpected side effect of using AndroidPay

Unexpected side effect of using AndroidPay

I didn't think using AndroidPay would really affect how I spend money, after all I had been using mobile apps and tap to pay for years and yet...

The advantage of having loyalty cards with your payment cards really can't be overstated. Scan, tap, done.

TD doesn't work with AndroidPay so I applied for my first new credit card in decades! While I'm there, what else does ScotiaBank offer than may interest me?

I can only tap up to $100 so I aim to be below that threshold even when grocery shopping. No more adding random items to the grocery list. Also easier to separate tasks into different budgets at the POS.

Do you notice cascade effects of what seemed like a small change?

  1. I live and breathe in Wunderlist. If I want it, I put it on a list. I rarely get anything I haven't put on a list first. I can ballpark how much things cost, what I need to routinely get, people are creatures of habit. Those loyalty cards not only tell the merchant who you are, they tell you what you're buying and when you shop. That affects reorder and stocking. There's a downside to loyalty cards: it's rare to find those programs administered by the merchant. They're farmed out to third parties - and some of those outfits make money selling your purchasing data to direct marketers and others. But that's true of your credit card, too.

Everyone's concerned about government intrusion into your data streams - and rightly so. But they're not the worst offenders: the credit reporting agencies are far, far worse and far less scrupulous.

When my kids were teenies, there was always that tussle over the Toy Section, the begging, the wheedling, it got annoying. So I stopped them both and said "Okay, I'd only intended to spend a half-hour here, but I need to teach you a lesson here. We're going through the WHOLE STORE and anything you want, I'm going to put it on a list, I don't care how long this takes.

"You'll have three whole days to look at that list and figure out which items you want, I'm going to get two items from the list for each of you. Remember all those One Day Wonders, those toys I bought and they lasted one day and broke and you cried about it - or you never played with them again? Think about that, too."

They went through the whole store, this item, that item - the list wasn't that long. We went back in three days and got the items they chose. Fairly sensible items, too, I was surprised.

"Now see here," I told the kids on the way home, "this is how grownups do it. About eighty percent of being a grownup is putting off what we want until we think about how badly we need it and the price we're paying for it. Now those advertisers, they know about kids, they put pictures of happy kids playing with those toys on the box. They're not selling you things, they're selling you happiness. And adults can be just as stupid. Don't be fooled, because they're usually lying. No problem with wanting something, just give yourself some time to think about it, that way when you eventually get it, you're getting what you've really wanted."

  2. That's how grownups should do it:)

  3. I'm thinking of dumping TD because of their Android Pay bullshit, as well as blocking rooting with their own app ... which never works anyway. I'll definitely be getting a different credit card.

  4. Do Canadian shoppers all look like those two? If so, that's another reason to move there! 👌

  8. I am cancelling basically everything TD and switching to Tangerine and Scotiabank money back visa. Its not just because of Android Pay but the stupid fees for having a chequing account. Android Pay just finally motivated me enough to pull the trigger.

  9. I think they are falling behind the curve. I got with TD because of great people when they went with the personal banker thing. Now we rarely go in the bank and it's always someone different. Closed out HELOC today to save on house insurance.

  10. Cass Morrison that's basically why we are switching to tangerine. We never go to a bank anymore except for maybe a bank draft, but tangerine will courier it or we can pick it up at the downtown location.

I am sick of having to either keep $5000 in a no interest chequing account or to get charged $40 /month because I move it to a savings account. Tangerine gives me a interest chequing account and no fees or minimum balance. Their rates are no longer as great as they were (due to the buy out by Scotia bank several years ago), but at least they don't have a million stupid fees and their web banking is kinda great.
