Wow, fascinating! They were just heading out for a three hour tour after all. It sounds like this fellow and his son used their heads, though. The most important lesson (in my opinion) is letting people know your planned outing duration and route. When you're out in the wild, things can go awry with little to no warning. I'm happy to hear they came out the other side no worse for wear.
