Time to remove the manual option for headlights.

Time to remove the manual option for headlights.

The Macan has 3 headlights options. Off, daytime running and auto. There should just be a special off switch for mechanics. They frequently get turned off during service and can be easy to forget to turn on while under urban lighting conditions.

BTW daytime running lights are awesome for increased visibility, especially dawn and dusk.

  1. I actually like DRL as long as they don't use a dimmed version of the brights. In some situations it's hard to see some cars with a low hanging sun near the horizon. Does improve safety, pehaps, but not by much.

  2. We've had running lights for decades here, pretty sure this would just be a programming thing.

  3. Also, accident rates are very behaviour related. Running lights make it easier to make a safe driving decision but doesn't make it for you and seems to have decreased rates by 5 to 10%. It's simply another tool in avoiding/surviving a collision.

  4. There are a lot of things that can be done after the fact, this is something simple before the fact (in Canada). If people are going to drive there needs to be more thorough qualifying for licenses and I am totally for accessing the vehicle computer in case of accidents as well as testing. But humans are not really good at sustained attention (scientific studies show that). There are a lot of devices on high end vehicles that help with collision avoidance that could be useful to push out. For instance, if someone slows down in front of me I get the juddering brake and a flashing dash icon. I found that out when someone in front of me turned right and I passed too close to the back of their car for sensor comfort. Had I had the adaptive cruise on it would have slowed the car automatically; since I was aware I decided to ignore it.

I think bikes are a special case. Some people don't think they should be on the road so they're even worse towards them.

  5. Cass Morrison I read that article, too, and I am in 100% agreement with you.

Many years ago, I nearly rear-ended a slow moving travel truck without rear lights on the highway in the pitch-black darkness. The back of the truck was mucky, too, so none of the metal surfaces reflected my headlights. I was almost on top of the truck when I noticed the stars being obscured by a dark blot. I was in an older car with my kids sleeping in the back seat. Lights on the back would have prevented the issue altogether.
