I like them both. The Orville took longer for me to enjoy.
They both had really good 2017 finales, I may have liked the Orville's a bit better.

I live in a small Canadian Prairie city with a spouse and a dog. We retired in 2018. This is what life is like.

Humble opinion, I think the prime timeline for Star Trek: Discovery isn't working for what they hoped for. The cliff hanger for ST:D imho kinda sucked in comparison to The Orville.
ReplyDeleteIt's free included in a standard cable package in Canada.
ReplyDeleteI got into the Orville right away... I'm still stuck episode 4 of discovery
ReplyDeleteGive me Roddenberry's Shatner, Nimoy, Nichols, Doohan and Keonig in '60s technicolor and I'm happy.
ReplyDeleteThese are two very different styles of shows. I like them both. I plan on continuing watching them when they resume after their break.
ReplyDeleteOrville took me 2 episodes to get into. I was expecting something like Family Guy, and was just confused in the first episode. Once I understood the style of the show, I got really into it. Orville really feels so much more like a Star Trek series of TOS and TNG. Orville covers social issues like TOS and TNG in a sci-fi setting. Each episode is mostly independent of each other. Although there are tie ins between some episode I don't feel you really need to see the whole series in sequence or even watch all of the episodes for continuity. The humour is a lot lighter than I expected which is the reason I was confused in the first episode when it wasn't near as funny as I was expecting.
Discovery is trying to tell a much bigger story. It's like the new Battlestar Galactica or the last half season of DS9. There's an ongoing story and each episode is more closely tied to each other. There is more focus on character development as well. I enjoy the story behind Burnham and Sarak. Lorca really steps over the edge, but I'd want him on my side in a battle.
