Lisa Raitt and the 'person up' comment is a propos and funny.

Seriously don't care to pander to white nationalist snowflakes.

  1. The right wing has nothing to talk about. I mean are they supposed to talk about those balanced budgets they twice promised? About how Reagan’s military build up would give us peace through strength?

  2. I would have preferred "humankind", honestly, to a new word. That said, when someone goes against Sebastian v. Gorka and Piers Morgan, he must be doing something right

  3. The problem seems to be our language implicitly includes 'man/men' Not a deal breaker unless you are working towards being inclusive. Person/people is truly non-gendered. Trudeau is trying ensure inclusiveness by using non-gendered speech. Someday it will be normal, just like the shift to fishers.

  4. I have no problem with his intention, which should be important for all politicians. But isn't "human" non gendered ? I mean, you could use "mankind" to only mean men; it would be really harder to do the same with "humankind". I understand the latin roots of the word "human", but that seems more remote.

    I really don't like new words :-)

  5. JP Belanger The term “black” replacing negro was similarly not liked. Then “black” was rallied around by the same people because they didn’t like African-American. Just because it’s new is not a convincing reason to dislike words. No, I don’t like jargon getting a sudden wide use, i.e. “systemic integrity” and other junk. But that’s not because of newness.

  6. Brian Arbenz I understand. I do have some OCD when it comes to words and this is doubtless a symptom of this.

BTW, Trudeau has since said he was joking with the word. Which sort of makes the point of this discussion somewhat moot. Or, like my wife would say "mute". I would, of course, correct her. :-)

  8. ...yeah, a bit of self-referential humor.

  9. So the U.S. right wing impulsively jumped into screaming mode without understanding what had really happened. In other words, it was another day in America

  10. Unusual in a politician exactly for the reason for the headlines
