This is how a community works to protect each other.
Glad they could save this senior from a costly mistake.

I live in a small Canadian Prairie city with a spouse and a dog. We retired in 2018. This is what life is like.

I don't get why she'd insist so much!
ReplyDeleteHer son needed the money.
ReplyDeleteI know, but Steam gift cards?
ReplyDeleteYeah, weird
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it worked out. I'll never forget the elderly woman who came into my work years ago with a similar situation. She came in several times, sending sizeable wire transfers overseas. After maybe the fourth of these, my coworker asked her what they were all for and discovered it was a classic "send me money and you'll get millions later" scam. We tried to convince her and even brought the police in but she wouldn't listen to them either.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, the cop told us he was sure she would simply get the transfers somewhere else and sure enough, we didn't see her again. Very sad but it's hard for strangers to believe people about these things. I'm not surprised a woman thinking she was helping her son would be hard to persuade.
Mahram Z. But this was her son whose story was corroborated by an alleged lawyer AND police officer who told her this was legitimate. She was obviously skeptical because he had to pull out two actors to convince her.
ReplyDeleteThe shocking part is not a mother wanting to help, it's a son who would go to such lengths to con his own mother!
Mel V wait ... this was her actual son?
ReplyDeleteMahram Z. Yeah, I had to re-read it myself at first because I couldn't believe the level of awfulness.
ReplyDeleteI though this was the usual scum bag claiming to be her son.
