Alberta has been lucky to have high paid, low prerequisite jobs available. Sort of extended the 70s with high paid male dominated jobs so "mancessions" no big surprise.
It's hard to suddenly cut expenses. It doesn't matter if you're higher paid that others in similar positions, you still have to give up stuff. I've spoken with men who ended up leaving the oil patch for less lucrative jobs. They felt the pay cut was a tough break but it was better to be working than waiting for good times to return. Some people adjust, some don't.
