With 3 military bases and Edmonton, Albertans should be aware of the military if not deployment.
Hopefully everyone would realize when you increase your likelihood of a violent death if you enlist. I have to admit the last thing I was was aware of was deployment in the middle east and the role in drone targeting. That is more than observer.
Most of the news around our military does concern emergency response. Realistically Canada is a buffer between 2 nuclear powers; we could never rely on the US to defend Canada other than as a by product of defending themselves. If the US did decide to invade, I think a high proportion of Canadians would welcome them (Ontario, rural prairies at least). In any case there's no way our military would be able to repel them; the best we could hope for is a guerrilla war where we poison our environment to decrease our attractiveness.

I live in a small Canadian Prairie city with a spouse and a dog. We retired in 2018. This is what life is like.

A real pity because it used to be thoroughly integrated with the country, with militia companies in every town.
ReplyDeleteAs for a US invasion, you're wrong about the rural prairies. I still have a fair number of friends and relatives who are in the Prairies. If anything they are not pro American in the slightest.
Rural Prairie people want to implement US style stand your ground and have long terms ones, 4 generation, have US family ties. OTOH we seem to listen to what farmers want. For instance getting rid of the Wheat Board. I don't think Trump is admired though.
