Time to shorten winter

It's with mixed feelings that we go this year. Usually it's the end of a busy time at work for me. This year we have Bennie and an Alberta election.

Kenney reminds me of a Pest Control outfit that tried to replace an existing our existing service. They came in with a bunch of solutions for problems we had already identified and were addressing. Same with AB politics at the moment. Kenney wants to "fix" health care by bringing in 2 tier system. AB admin costs are already lowest across Canada at 4.5%. One cost saving was cutting the salary of the head of Alberta Health Care. I'll be that wouldn't be a UCP priority. WCB and farmers? To me, farmers need to be protected from losing their small business due to employees being injured on the job and suing. WCB provides that protection. Pipelines? What more could be done. The current government has taken every opportunity to lobby the Feds about oil in addition to listening to smaller oil company requests to limit production and lease rail cars. What about schools having to have GSA clubs if requested? Big deal. Kids should have access to common interest activities. This thing about informing parents is just another power play by religious people. People with good relationships tell others all sorts of things from sexual preferences to health issues. If you aren't informed, perhaps consider why. Then there's the statement about MEN'S employment being at the lowest level ever. There are jobs; just not ones manly men want to have.

There is a problem with employment. More people want meaningful work and are willing to take lower pay. I am one of those people. I took lower paying jobs; research, compliance (not a lawyer) because I do want to find ways to preserve the environment and help people work more safely. Perhaps look outside marketing for jobs. Also some elements of masculinity just aren't working for men. This does tie back to jobs available vs. the ones men want to have. When I was at exercise class yesterday I realized there are two types of workouts I do. One is spin which drains stress through exhaustion. The other is stress relief through joyful activities (for me the dance style of  Rev and Flow) that don't work your heart to death. Men need help with that type of activity. It used to happen with hunting and fishing (there's a lot of sitting around).

As for SNCL - Quebec is really like another country for this Western Canadian. From restricting languages and religious symbols (except RCC) in public to being on the forefront of mass shootings in Canada. And yet - here we are. Once of their oldest corporations could be bringing down the government simply by insisting they are too important instead of doing anything to demonstrate change.

See you on the flip side.

  1. Good update on the important and complex Canadian political reality. In the U.S., we're hearing of Trudeau missteps almost daily. You are fortunate, at least, to have a parliamentary system. In the U.S., we vote for a personality and the winner's style and ethos are portrayed as the new national mood and purpose. In the parliamentary system, the understanding is that national values transcend a party's rise or fall.
