Time for a new tree

When we first moved into our house we planted a tree in the front yard. We had wanted a clump birch but a weeping birch was planted by mistake. Weeping birches are not as hardy and ours started shedding big time in the last couple years. We got an arborist to do an assessment - we could take the tree down now or wait 5 years. We decided on now since we were replacing the tree.

Today was the big day!

First up - trim one long branch and add a guide rope to control where the tree falls.

Then chop off some lower branches start the cut.

Remove the stump - this was hard to see because they were protecting surroundings from flying wood chips.

Clean up the area and prep for new tree.

Finally new tree is planted.

Our local park has a lot of different trees in it so we walked around and decided what we wanted. We were torn between a chestnut type tree and a maple. Both have pretty fall foliage, are for our zone (2) and large leaves. We did put ashes from all our dogs as part of the planting. The old tree was quite diseased - there are beetles that attack these birches. Small branches were chipped on site and the larger bits will be chipped off site. The chips are used for mulch by the City.

Highly recommend Lloyd Limb Service if you are in our area. Not only great clean up but great care during the job. Wearing full PPE (hardhats with face shields, ear muffs etc.) and mics for communication. Also put pads down where they were driving the stump remover to protect the lawn.  👍👍

It will take some time to get used to a small tree again.

  1. It's always a bit sad to see a tree go, but then again, if they are stricken by parasites or disease, it's better to start afresh.

And I will never not like an ash tree :)

  2. Yes, we had a choice of waiting 5 years for slow death or having a new tree grow for that 5 years. I liked the old tree a lot but the new one is not as disease prone.
