A book and 2 apps

I routinely escape my doom scrolling (now with REDDIT - oh no!) by reading books and writing reviews on Amazon and/or Goodreads. This time I'm putting the review here! By coincidence I've also added 2 new apps to my phone so I thought I would include a first impression of them as well.

I like to read newer authors and right now I'm in the mood for PI stories. Sweet Sixteen Killer falls into that category so let's dive in! It's a hard boiled detective style story set in current times. Our main character shakes up her life to leave a police department and become a private investigator. Her first case is the death of a teen that is part of a serial killing. The story leads off with a vignette about rebellious teen that ends in  their sexual assault/death. Then we get to meet Masterson and rest.

This is a story full of strong women - detective, mother, journalist, school vice principal - and those who undercut them which include most of their bosses and some of their colleagues. This isn't a pity party though and they all work together to get things done. The pacing is good and plot is cohesive; if you're following along the killer is no surprise. The characters are defined by how they interact with those around them and are as well-rounded as can be on a first outing. If I have one complaint it would be sometimes the sentences are choppy but that seems to be style choice.

I'm going to give it 👍🏽👍🏽  Price and length is right for an enjoyable (if you don't mind some violence) read.

Now for a couple Android Apps

I just joined the SORTEDFOOD club and had to download PodcastAddict to listen to their podcast. I've been using Spotify and finding it a bit frustrating because I can't seem to get the stop at the end of a podcast to work. I have to admit I'm more of a want to listener than a listener BUT there are podcasts I've wanted to listen to like White Coat Black Art. It was easy to find and add content and you can, of course, download episodes onto your device. I may do the one time purchase at some point but the ads on the free version are pretty non-intrusive.

The other app I downloaded is Kanbani - a To-do app that I found out about from PocketNow. I like the idea of moving a task through stages from planning to completion. It will be interesting to see how it pans out but the nice thing is you don't have to create an account to use it and it's free.

  1. I'm glad to read your review of Sweet Sixteen Killer, because I can trust you, a feminist, to assess the subject matter with genuineness. I also appreciate your heads up on the book's violence, which I'm not up to processing right now.
As for these apps, when I cut my work hours starting in coming months, I may take a look at more tech offerings.

  2. I like that the characters are people with motivations. I found it hard to read the matter of fact garbage the female characters were subject to.

  3. BTW, I'm with Reddit. I started posting there a few weeks ago. I like it, but it's been a bit awkward getting adjusted to it.
