I wear a tracker but am aware health is not simply calorie balance. Education shouldn't be left to food producers.
In some ways I think it's a good thing to tie food to exercise so people see how much they need to do - at a minimum - and encourage physical play. There is so much benefit to finding activities you enjoy - teamwork, friendship, stress relief, feeling of challenge/accomplishment. Nutrition needs more of a focus though, not just steps.
