Safe design (aka ergonomics) is about routine things working in an expected manner.

Safe design (aka ergonomics) is about routine things working in an expected manner.

If you've ever gone somewhere that you drive on the other side of the road you know how long it takes to adjust reflexes. For a long time habit can jerk you into the path of a hazard. This gear shift design is totally alien to North American culture. Add the shape and responses together without interlocks and you have irresponsible design. Tones can be irritating, seat belt not on, door open, hatch opening warning and, yes, car not in park when turned off but humans are distractable.

  1. The software update in the car to set it to park automatically is like autocorrect used to fixed typos made on touchscreen keyboards. It doesn't fix the flawed design of touchscreen keyboards which is the lack of tactile feedback.

  2. Frickin' trend-happy automotive designers, twice too clever for their own good. Conventions exist for a reason and you better have a really good set of justifications for deviating any time there are safety implications.
