Study active people with a BMI of 23.5 and sweetener makes no difference to weight. Go figure.

People were eating ~1900 Cal/day - around what I eat or maybe a little more. Unless they were drinking a lot of pop, the calories aren't going to make a lot of difference and the weight could be as simple as retaining water. Needs a much larger sample size and longer study period.

  1. It wasn't a blind study because 83% of the subjects were able to correctly identify which group they were in. I would have like to have seen the result of people who either didn't know or were wrong about which group they were in.

  2. Just seeing this post makes me want to open a can of CocaCola, but I won't.

  3. I just find that most artificial sweeteners taste bad, so I actually eat/drink less of it (LOL)! Actually, we use xylitol (which tastes amazing) in our house for all our sweetening, so ... maybe I do eat more! Not for the reasons in the study, perhaps, but ... now I'm all self-conscious ;)

  4. I've stopped with a lot of sugar and right now we're using some stevia a friend gave us. Sugar has some nice undertones for flavour though.

  5. I used to like dirty l diet drinks because the taste less sweet. I decided to go back to the real stuff after hearing about other potential health risks with artificial sweeteners.

  6. Cass Morrison next time you swing by a health food store, pick up a small bag of xylitol and try it out - there are a zillion brands, but it's like the difference between Rogers sugar and Redpath sugar. They charge a ridiculous sum for it, though, irrespective of brand ... it's significantly less expensive online. I won't launch into the long list of why it's awesome (wikipedia can tell you that), but I will tell you that it tastes fantastic, almost identical to sugar, only better! It's produced from birch trees and corn cobs.

  7. I have lots of sucralose and now this Truvia so I won't be needing sweetener any time soon:) Xylitol sounds like a good option just because of the glycemic index thing.

  8. Sucralose is (in my opinion) the worst, in part due to it's awful flavour. Sure, it's sweetish, but it has that almost unbearable aftertaste! I have a bit of Splenda in my cupboard because my dad likes it o.O. but I just can't stand putting it in anything haha!

Anyhoo, put xylitol on your radar, and if you ever have the opportunity to try some, you really should just for fun!

  9. Sugar leaves a cloying aftertaste to my tongue and upsets my stomach. I prefer the bitter kick of aspertame, but mostly just prefer less sweetener of any kind.

I started chewing gum with xylitol when I was pregnant to help a certain back up my gut was experiencing. It's great but be warned it can promote serious regularity ;-)

  10. Adella Wright yeah, that's true. Since xylitol is treated like soluble fibre, it tends to cause that effect - at least for awhile. Some people tend to get pretty funky flatulence for awhile, too. I've been eating it for so long now (well over a decade) that my guts don't have any gastrointestinal anomalies any more, no matter how much I eat ;)
