The Affordable Care Act will be edited - not suspended - by the incoming administration.

I refuse to call it Obamacare because just using that name blinds people to the benefit of the plan. The ACA will remain as the initial step toward detaching basic health care coverage from employment. Plans will be cheaper and provide less services so insurance companies can retain profits. Hatch even makes coverage mandatory with payment through tax credit. I'm a big fan of means testing. Well off people just don't need to add to their hoard by getting money from the government, subsidies or tax credit.

  1. The main problem with means testing is that it usually ends up costing more - in both economic and social terms - than it saves. It stigmatizes receiving aid, to boot.

  2. Yes, the problem with means testing is that it is mostly used to deny services to people who need it. Or it is used to keep people down; it creates all or nothing situations that lock people into poverty for example because it strips people of all support the moment they start earning anything. Sure these things could be tweaked, but there is never the political will for it, and politicians can always drum up support for punitive tightening rather than easing.

Now, I suppose I should actually read the article.

  3. I'm surprised to hear those costs since our government has everything on computer and direct deposit I don't see the additional cost. I pay for income reporting errors and amend my tax return for additional refunds on line. We have means testing for Old Age Security in Canada (everyone gets Canada Pension Plan). How would anyone know the source of what ends up in your bank account?

  4. Having read this, I think it is incumbent on ALL of us to start calling our representatives and let them know that we want ACA/medicare etc. I think we need to be noisy about this, regardless of the political position of our particular representatives.
