Interesting descriptions and very different than when I worked in research labs with grad students.

On campus, a lot of grad students worked at night. I would go in on weekends if my experiments happened to fall that way. In one group, head researcher wouldn't pass through the lab for weeks although there would be meetings. The other group's head researcher had coffee with us (employees) but still maintained distance from his students to allow them flexibility and independence. In neither case where they involved with bench work. And nearing the end of their degree, people frequently looked disheveled and were absent because they were writing and rewriting.

I worked in heavy oil research in the late 80s early 90s..

  1. Grad students are in a precarious position if there is anything untoward going on with the group.
