  1. (After writing this, I realized I sorta yammered on and on about stuff ... sorry about the long winded comment!)

    You know, I think you nailed one of the most important things - taking the time to focus on what y'er stuffin' down yer gullet. They sorta touch on that in the article, but it has other benefits, too. If you're like me, you really like good food - taking some time to savour the flavour helps with reducing how much (as long as you're not enjoying it so much that you go back for seconds, haha). It also gives the 'ole stomach time to tell you that yer full. Eating at your desk while working is just not good on so many levels. I do it too, though, so my strategy has been to build lunches with appropriate sizes in mind. And I never buy snacks from the machines at work, mostly because I know it's terrible dollar-value though, haha.

    They talk a bit about a few things that I would almost write-off entirely. Buffet restaurants, for instance. Under most circumstances, the quality of food is lowish, and you almost always feel like you need to eat more in order to get your money's worth. I think that's a normal feeling, and I think the best way to combat it is to just not go there. The other thing is bags of things. I do bring a few snacky things in my lunch as a treat or to fill the gap when I need a boost (since my job is physical when I'm in the field, I have a good excuse). Otherwise, I make a few healthy, yummy things for my snacks that are in appropriate sizes. I don't like the idea of buying a large bag of X and portioning it out, unless I am confident that it's good value (in terms of nutrition per dollar).

    There are certain foods that people should target if they want to reduce their portion sizes. Certain grains like quinoa, for example, are well acknowledged to be excellent food value - fill you up, don't cost an arm & leg, and have tons of nutrients. Another remarkable one is green onions. They contain an enzyme (I'll see if I can find the article I read about this) that contributes to your stomach signalling your brain that it's full. It's quite remarkable.

    Finally, they don't talk much about producing your own food at all. I'm not one of these crazy people that thinks everyone should grow everything they eat, that be crazy. No, I mean grow stuff that you like, or with a specific target in mind. So herbs like basil and thyme add huge nutritional value, for example. And I really love peppers of all kinds, so I've gone a little batty and I'm growing just about every type of pepper known to man. Yes, I am out of space in my house. LOL

  2. Really good points about growing herbs (we need to for the winter). In the summer we have apples, strawberries and other fruit. Fred's growing potatoes and rhubarb. Maybe we'll try spinach again because we eat more of it now.

    I am pretty diligent about what goes into my lunch bag for sure and those keep me on track. Proper snacking so I don't get super hungry is another thing they don't really talk about. If I get hungry, I can't reset for a couple days.

    Oh and brunches and buffets are a write off for me. I am guaranteed to overeat and frequently feel crappy after. Fred's vegan cooking with meat protein at lunch is good enough for me.

  3. Yeah, Rochelle bought me one of those Aerogarden contraptions for Christmas, and it's been a lot of fun. It was expensive, but she knows how much joy I get from growing things. So I have some cherry tomatoes and some herbs growing in it. If you want to grow herbs all winter, this thing is the bees knees.     It has a little pump inside that circulates the water/nutrients, so it has this soft gurgling sound all the time that isn't annoying at all. And the one I have has a touch screen (which is totally unnecessary but ... it looks super fancy LOL). So now I have fresh thyme and basil all winter long!
