Really interesting read for those who don't have boys. There's a harsh interval they need to get through.

I think all you can really do is set an example and be consistent in living your values.

  1. Raising a child is not always about imbuing character into them. There are times when it’s about tolerating undesirable bents, which they will get past.

  2. I understand Gareth Owen . The author was describing how he was raised, not how he was raising his sons. I was reading the magazine version where this was a preamble to many stories about boys. They were interesting to me because I've never been a boy or a parent to a boy.

I know skilled physical labour has been pretty well always treated as a less desirable outcome - probably because a lot of those people wouldn't be able to cut a job where the outcome is just there. You can't alter the poor quality of your work whereas you can convince people you are really smart if you take their money and lose it in spite of being an "expert investor". I would definitely encourage people into apprenticeship programs. Where else can you learn a skill that will pretty well always be in demand and the opportunity to be your own (and others) boss if you lean that way.

  3. Brian Arbenz I realized that when I was talking to different guys. Many of them did marginally criminal activities but are responsible adults/parents.

  4. I think the biggest thing is teaching children the same lessons from each parent. We don't seem to as good at teaching boys that emotions are ok as we are at teaching girls that being able to do basic home maintenance is a good thing.
