An apology is useless without a way forward to prevent it from recurrence. Secular law and restorative justice are essential tools along with disrupting online communities of "lone wolves".
Nothing will bring back the dead and little will speed the healing of grief. We, as taxpayers, pay for the housing of these criminals. They should provide the invaluable work of caring for the disenfranchised. They can build housing, clean, care for and otherwise be (hopefully) made to see the humanity of others. They also learn skills for post sentencing that could help them become productive members of our communities.
Disrupting violent rhetoric is key. Perhaps the only way forward for that is to randomly assign avatars to each user when logging on to any corporately held networks that provide public services or every 24 hours. People would be known by their content. This distributes the likelihood of being a target as well as being the bully. Leaders of companies and countries would have to spend a week in VR as the least valued of their community. Asocial people thrive in a capitalist world, they need to live with what they have wrought.

Ultimately, justifying for many a reason for increasing gun sales to fight for freedom or to kill themselves with them.
Fundamental bottoms up investment in the system is what is needed through education. The jobs would come later. Lets be honest The US infrastructure is in need of repair.
Unfortunately the people keep giving this potential away to the 1% in the form of tax breaks, leaving nothing but chaos for the lower 99%.
When will the people learn punishment is not the key to the solution but a small part of the solution.

ReplyDeletePaul Robinson This is in Canada; we have lots of education. In Alberta, the current provincial government has done many things - raise minimum wage, lower small business tax, budgeted for increases in infrastructure, education and health care. The carbon tax - a conservative/capitalist solution to pollution - is rebated to low/fixed income people and the money used to fund renewable energy infrastructure. Albertans are still higher paid than any other province yet the men feel hard done by because their wages have fallen because of corporate spending.
All of these will be used against them by Kenney and the UPC because it's not top down authoritarianism by a dynamic male leader that privileges wealth and religion.

ReplyDeleteI knew it was just a matter of time before someone read the term “Liberals” in the post as the standard U.S. right wing pejorative. In Cass Morrison’s nation it’s the proper name for a political party. The Liberal Party, as I have followed Canadian politics, has been alternately a social democratic party, then a pro-business party. In the United States, Liberal is largely a cultural genre term. In Britain, it was a longtime centrist party which merged with the newly created Social Democratic Party to form the Liberal Democrats, a term which also involves confusion with U.S. terminology. What Americans don’t generally realize is that their own Liberalism is centrist, not the left. FDR created a considerable amount of government involvement in life to prevent the United States from going Socialist or Social Democratic. A modest growth of government prevented much more.
