Really, just by being in the drugstore by the pharmacy, it is implied supplements are healthy even though there is product quality control. Interestingly, the items on the list may be listed as a natural health product but I'm not sure I would lump vitamins and minerals in with echinecea. I can't wait for medical AI that gives recommendations solely on efficacy and all recommendations are covered under our health care. People who want to pursue supplements and other wellness can either purchase outright or through supplemental health insurance.

  1. What an excellent article! And it appears very Alberta-centric even, considering the survey. I'm happy to hear that detox kits are not peddled by pharmacists; and the recommendations for vitamin D are quite probably warranted (especially in children) based on what I've read (mostly respected peer reviewed sources). I'm surprised about the fish oil, though.

There is a lot of pressure on pharmacists, probably more than the pressure on GP doctors, to provide information off-the-cuff to every crazy person looking to self-medicate. They're really the last line of defense, and that bothers me. They're human. I agree with you that AI or deep neural nets might be a boon to our health when it comes to this stuff ... one day.

  2. Yes I rarely see stuff so applicable 😃. There's also the profit part applying pressure.
