Good guide for communication.

Good guide for communication.

And great science based rebuttal. Toxicity calculations are super simple (grade 2 level math) and information is readily available for foods and chemicals.

  1. The problem is "Lorraine " will still be offended by the information.

  4. Unfortunately, the author is incorrect in much of her analysis.

The tolerable upper intake limit (UL) is the highest level of intake for a nutrient that is likely to pose no risk of adverse health effects for almost all individuals in the general population. The risk of adverse effects increases from any nutrient as intake increases above the UL. The UL is also often developed without specific reference to pregnancy.

It is plainly unscientific to measure water in 'glasses'. She also completely ignores the effect of direct application of fluoride on the teeth plus ingestion through fluoridated water sources.

Even her use of the term 'toxicity' is wrong. Toxicity does not equate to a fatal dose. Toxicity is a spectrum of damage caused to an organism by over-exposure to a substance.

It wasn't until 2013 that the European Food Safety Authority gave any recommendation for the inclusion of fluoride in dietary sources. The EFSA still holds the position that fluoride is not an essential nutrient and that no adequate intake (minimum) value exists. The only benefit of dietary fluoride is the prevention of tooth caries in the general population, mostly because the general population has such poor dental hygiene.

Finally, much of our scientific understanding of nutrition is still in fluctuation, and it mostly focuses on the 75 kilogram adult male. It is somewhat reckless to rely on the UL with respect to a non-essential dietary element.

As much as Lorraine is wrong because she holds an uneducated belief, so too is the author because she equates scientific evidence of no harm in a limited study with a belief that fluoride is not harmful. Further, she makes no mention of the fact that fluoride is not essential.

Of course, the author does get it right that Lorraine was completely insensitive. It's really too bad that author rebuts Lorraine with her own ignorance and her scientific hope-ism.

  5. Yes, you continue to present thorough commentary that aligns with absolutely no evidence, and even flies in the face of a world health authority. Bravo, Clinton Hammond. You are truly the epitome of reasoned discourse. Bravo.
