I live in a small Canadian Prairie city on Treaty 6 territory with a spouse and a dog. We retired in 2018. This is what life is like.
Likely depends on the job and how wealthy you are.
I think they just don't see the down side.
Difficult to determine a downside for Canada...especially these days... I spent a great deal of time as a contractor working in the US, comparing lifestyles with US colleagues in general evoked some degree of jealousy on the part of the Americans.
More bang for your buck if you are in the US but that assumes you have bucks...I notice it when I go down. Food, gas etc is cheaper.
