Do you pay attention during the safety video when you fly? I always identify and count rows to the emergency exit.

Do you pay attention during the safety video when you fly? I always identify and count rows to the emergency exit.

I can't believe the picture with this article https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/what-the-southwest-flight-can-teach-us-about-oxygen-masks_us_5ad78dafe4b029ebe0207d81 Flight attendants demonstrate correct use EVERY TIME THE PLANE IS ABOUT TO TAKE OFF

Gaythia Weis suggests poor ergonomic design and certainly use of emergency equipment should be intuitive. In the time I've been flying I think the only change has been going from a stiff cup with an inflated bag that needed a sharp tug to a soft silicon mask and continuous positive air flow so the bag doesn't inflate.

  1. People panic. Parents always want to put the masks on their kids first. Stuff like that.

For covering noses, i would change the shape of the mask to make that obvious.

As for heels and luggage on that slide, I dunno man. I understand the heels a bit better, you automatically ahve your shoes on. Or a backpack you had at your feet. But in an emergency, WTF is sitting in the aisles for the next 10 minutes getting baggage out? The solution in this case may have to be puncture proof slides b/c people ARE STUPID. Or locking overhead bins to at least keep people from trying to get that out.

  2. There's certainlyl improvementsairlines could make - automatic lock of overhead bins in case of emergency is one. Mask is difficult because it's one size fits all.

I think passengers are forcing flight attendants to exert authority. In our last trip - attendants actually sent people to the back of the line when they tried to board out of order and there were some pretty sharp announcements to sit down as the plane was not yet at the terminal

  3. The masks are already just one size. I'm talking about a generalized triangle shape maybe. Or hell, print a nose on one part and a chin on the other that you see wehn you look into it to put it on...

  4. The thing with the current mask shape is you can't put it upside down. I guess the makers thought knowing you breathe through your nose and mouth is common knowledge.
