Don't think "caving" and "making a decision before escalating" are mutually exclusive as there was a lot of escalation right away. ArenaNet, like Reddit, has made very clear they're on the side of very fine people.
I do hope the developers find other gigs. The problem with social media for gaming developers is they can be targeted and, at some point, are likely to make statements that can be twisted. If I were a dev I would would definitely silo that aspect of my life from everything else.
