2017 End of Summer Giveaway thanks to LG
Hey, everybody, I don't know about your area, but as I'm heading out to go camping or other earlier morning activities, it's getting a little nippy. That means it's getting close to the close of the season.  Kids will be back at school, and we'll have some ...

Americans on average eat 8 oz. of meat per day (double the world average), which translates into killing 10 billion animals annually; Americans drink on average 400 Coca Cola products each year (the world average is 92); 20% of American meals are consumed in vehicles. I'm zero, zero, and zero so far this year.

Removing the iconic home button, introducing the infinity display and 18.5:9 isn't innovative.

Who knew?

I agree with Android Central writer that Samsung isn't competing with other Android manufacturers but his statement about them innovating shows just how quickly a change becomes mundane. And saving dual screens so they launch together has come and gone on tablets for a couple years.

How to call the elderly?

How to call the elderly?

Gerontologist Dee Wadsworth suggests:

"As a gerontologist I use the phrase ‘older adult.’ Cohort words like Senior and Boomer refer to specific generations. Boomers will never respond to the term senior because that was their parent. I was taught to avoid ageism best to use older adult just like we use younger adult. It refers to the continuum of lifespan development."

Of course, the terminology is not necessarily the main issue, but still it underlies the mass attitudes about aging and aged people.

Finally hit a sugar wall

Bought an ice cream cone at the park. I thought it was one scoop and caramel roll sounded interesting. It was 2 humongous scoops and those are mini Rolos. I ended up eating more than I wanted to and extracting several of the Rolos and not eating. I'm going to finish the cone after supper but expect the Rolos to go in the bin again.

Note to self, next time get a kid's cone.

We have lots of space and a low birthrate but tent living here will be much more unpleasant than tent living most places - we have winter. We need to do more to get places like Haiti livable. Seven years on they shouldn't be as badly off as they remain.

There are 2 prongs education and demonstration.

There are 2 prongs education and demonstration.

Educate early - publicize immigration/refugee processes. For those who say they are nationalists ask what exactly they mean, ask how they are discriminated against in their eyes. Have them go through all the hoops of immigration paperwork and interview. Make them recognize immigrants are sponsored and don't have the same access to social services. Ask them why they think being born in Canada makes them so special when immigrant pay taxes too.

We are lucky our demonstrations are not implicitly violent through loose weaponry. Recognize mobs damage stuff and move demonstrations to areas with easy access/egress (prevent panic) but clear it of stuff that can get damages (cars, shops, plants etc.) Big bouncy castles;)

Canada considers a 42 day limit for election campaigning.

Canada considers a 42 day limit for election campaigning.

I think this would be a good thing - actually maybe a 49 day limit. If elected officials are doing their jobs (taking information from electorate, forming legislation that balance corporate and public interests with rest of cabinet etc.) it would take a week to shift into campaign mode. Plus there's getting everyone registered and having debates.

I also think any ads that do not focus on policy should be minimized. You can state 45% agree blah, blah and here's how our policies would improve on that or 55% disagree and here's what our policy would change. There are ways to moderate spin. I would also mandate door knocking and/or neighbourhood town halls so people would meet the candidate or representative.

The garbage that was media coverage of the last US election cannot be allowed to infect ours.

Bixby and the August Security update!

It's been quite the distracting day. I got the Hidden task bar update a couple weeks ago.

On the down side I stepped on a sharp stick. It pierced by flip flop and the skin in the middle of my foot. Good thing I'm all about keeping my vaccinations up to date. I got my tetanus shot boosted in the last couple years when we got flu shots. Still - oww.

Do you think your cell phone is the same as a briefcase?

Do you think your cell phone is the same as a briefcase?

Yes most people do expect different requests and behaviour at the border but still expect some right to privacy. Most of us would agree with the 2014 ruling

It was decided that for a search to be lawful in such scenarios, there would have to be a relevant law enforcement purpose for the search, the search could not be indiscriminate, and officers would be required to take detailed notes on what was searched and how.

To me it reflects the dichotomy of phone ownership. The suppliers (carrier and manufacturers) make all sorts of restrictive claims on the device regardless of whether we buy them outright or on a plan. As shown by the Note 7 episode - many people have control over your device that can make it into an expensive paperweight. This gives weight to the argument that a mobile phone is a "good" for the purposes of the customs act.

Something to watch.

I love the Voluminous Lash Paradise mascara. Please don't change the formula!

I love the Voluminous Lash Paradise mascara. Please don't change the formula!

Many (many) moons ago, I used to be able to walk into a drugstore, buy Covergirl Lashblast Waterproof Mascara and know I be satisfied with the results. A couple of swipes and hello lashes, no need for liner. Then the product changed and the line expanded to several different product uses. Thus the search for the perfect product was born. I was using Bourjois Clubbing long wear for awhile then it changed and the roaming began.

Now search is ended.

The product is wet enough you can pat it in at the base of the lashes and wiggle out to the end to get a nice layer. A second layer gives a super fringe. Product builds on the Lash rather than forming a tube around the Lash so there is very little fall out. It's not so wet that you get a mess if you blink between coats.

If you like the Two-faced Better than Sex product - this seems to be very similar including the applicator brush style. At half the price, it's hard to go wrong.

Wall drove SK into the same ditch Alberta hit in the 90s but SK didn't get good roads out of the deal.

Wall drove SK into the same ditch Alberta hit in the 90s but SK didn't get good roads out of the deal.

Wall, so proud of drawing business away from Alberta through low royalties. He never figured out those royalties pay for services and those companies are going to leave when the economics go bad. And he pulled the same garbage Alberta did as well. Cutting services to save money after the crash even though those services didn't benefit from the oil money. We lived in SK in the 90s. Roads were getting dished out from the transition of grain hauling to inland terminals rather than rail stops. Then oil was transported the same way. Primary highways were twinned but secondary ones not so much maintenance. I can see giving farmers a break but bigger business not so much.

Perhaps Alberta was lucky to boom in the 50s where government was for the people. Strong environmental framework to build on and infrastructure that benefits everyone.

It's the detain portion is a fundamental change that concerns me.

We've seen how well Canada protects it's citizens with the Khadr case. The US government takes many opportunities to undermine Canadian social structure from bashing our health care system to controlling the definition of subsidy for the purpose of trade to dairy management which, at minimum, reduces food waste.

Things that are routine in Canada - reproductive rights, same sex marriage, inclusive military - are all disputed at various state levels if not the federal level. Should that become an issue during pre-clearance we should be able to withdraw our request to visit without penalty and certainly without detention.

Of the 2 prongs, the biggest challenge (to me) is the body want to maintain the weight set point.

Prong 1 - imbalance in calories consumed and calories used
Prong 2 - the body has a weight set point it works very hard to sustain

Once weight is gained and the body resets its set point. (Seems like at the drop of a hat really) In order to have good information to base recommendations, there has to be a better way to track food metabolism. Biomarkers and urine seem the most user friendly. Obesity is a problem simply because of increased risk in medical issues.

From personal experience, I've had to stabilize weight then be very consistent in the lower weight until a new set point is created. I never expect to lose weight through diet alone; I lower calories and exercise hard. I'm not sure how that's going to work now that I'm older and my ankle makes it hard to implement higher impact workouts. It's taken 4 years for my crap eating habits to return after my accident and in the interim I've over developed my sweet tooth. Now we're both working on upping our protein intake and making sure any snacks are nutritionally dense.

I've felt low energy and sensitive to aches for a couple months. Only at home.

I hate going to the doctor for diffuse symptoms. I have 2 prescriptions for respiratory ailments that I use only when needed. Unfortunately I don't realize I need them until I feel crappy. One of the first signs is dizziness, low energy and...eating extra candy (for energy I guess). I have mild seasonal allergy type reactions to living here. It could also be low iron levels so I'll try B12.

Twitter and Facebook show their willingness to overlook harassment.

Twitter is the worse. You can't really say anything nuanced in 140 (or so) characters but it's great for insults and garbage behaviour. There is little conversation threading and once crap takes over your screen it's impossible to wade through without reading at least some of the insults. I know block bots for users have been created. Is there no way to run an assistant that would forward personal attack messages to Twitter admin then delete them? I am all for hard conversations with people I disagree with (even on twitter) but really draw the line at "you should (violent act)" or "I hope you (violent act)".

BTW, for all it's changes, that behaviour is why I'm on G+.

Pet Vax-questioning has been here a long time and it started with rabies.

Pet Vax-questioning has been here a long time and it started with rabies.

Did rabies need boosting every year or was a 3 year cycle was sufficient. Now we vaccinate every 3 years so that was a question worth asking. Vet care is expensive and I don't vaccinate for disease that isn't a risk in our area. I also didn't do flea/tick regularly because, again not endemic for our area. We do bordatella even though the effectiveness is questionable because the dogs go to a kennel that requires it and they don't have any observable reaction. And deworming, dogs like eating dead/decaying things and we have a yard.

I had a dog with autoimmune disease so he didn't get his vaccination while he had an episode that degraded his liver. I kept him away from other animals. Eventually he was boosted. Milo and Duffy don't even yip when they get their boosters. Milo is 15 and Duffy is 12 August 30.

It envisions an alternate history where newly freed African Americans have secured the Southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama post-Reconstruction as reparations for slavery, and with that land, the freedom to shape their own destiny. The sovereign nation they formed, New Colonia, has had a tumultuous and sometimes violent relationship with its looming “Big Neighbor,” both ally and foe, the United States. The past 150 years have been witness to military incursions, assassinations, regime change, coups, etc. Today, after two decades of peace with the U.S. and unprecedented growth, an ascendant New Colonia joins the ranks of major industrialized nations on the world stage as America slides into rapid decline. Inexorably tied together, the fate of two nations, indivisible, hangs in the balance.”
