There should be a large enough pool of units to dedicate some to pet owners. Maybe the SPCA should become landlords for people and animals.

There should be a large enough pool of units to dedicate some to pet owners. Maybe the SPCA should become landlords for people and animals.

Dogs (and other pets) don't recognize property ownership and many people are not good at respecting other people's choices not to be affected by pets. I like cats, just not in my yard. I know there are people who like dogs, just not in their hearing. Allergies aside, pet owners can be their own worst enemy.

$750 seems like a lot for a dog from the SPCA. I don't know how much Hobbes will cost but Milo was more than that 15 years ago.

Once again, the rich get richer and the workers are left out in the cold. This is all greed on the part of the finance gurus because they can't look any further than next week thus driving the stock price down if the company chooses to do anything other than strip assets.

Conversations at our house look like this.

Watching Milo interact with us now really emphasizes how much Duffy changed the pack dynamic. Milo is back to eating super slowly, coming to check on what we're doing, playing and generally hanging around in my space. Now that he's old he isn't doing stairs unless he has to (bio breaks).

We're getting a pup in July (Hobbes) but he shouldn't be a bother to Milo for at least 6 months. With both of us home most of the time, it should be easy to make sure there are no noses out of joint.

We built our house to maximize natural light.

It's easy to forget just how big our windows are and how bright our house is when winters are so long. Our builder had remarked on it. A lot of newer homes seem to be built with darker colours and smaller windows. I get the smaller windows - less heat loss but darker colours :( It's something to look for when we go househunting on the coast. Low natural light and white wall are something we agree we do not want.

Yes, there is a clear objective for the training and yes it is voluntary. Good things. To increase effectiveness they need to practice against a likely suspect and very regular practice. I think bullet proof doors, teaching how to use fire extinguishers as weapons and having less access to guns would be more effective.

I have always thought the dichotomy between science and art was false. Both require imagination to excel.

From the article...

“Both science and art are creativity and imagination and execution,” Johnson says. “You come up with new ideas and you test those ideas and you execute them. So I find that the creative people of the world come in many flavors. People always talk about science and art as being very different things, and I find them to be very similar things.”

edited to add I never thought CP Snow was actually stating there should be a division but that any division was artificial because art and science are synergistic.

Growing up as a Martian on Earth has left Jas Harrington solitary, quick-tempered, and with zero tolerance for fools. All plus points when working as chief security officer aboard prospecting starships.

Jas' latest berth is aboard the Galathea , which trawls the reaches of the galaxy seeking precious minerals and rare resources. She thinks it's a routine trip. She's wrong.

An inspection of a far-flung planet leaves Jas suspicious that there's more to the place than meets the eye. If only she could convince the captain of the need for caution, but she might as well wish for a tasty meal in the ship's canteen.

When the captain disciplines Jas for insubordination, she has only two allies: a timid navigator and the second pilot, who has the hots for her. Not that Jas notices.

All hell breaks loose, and Jas' skills are put to the ultimate test. Can she enlist the help of the only two friends she has? She's in a race against time to prevent the aliens from achieving their goal: Generation.

If she fails, the ship's crew, the galactic empire, and humanity itself are at risk.

I think I drove the LeadNow phone contact crazy when I said I was more interested in getting the Senate impartial and working on what we have to be representative. If voting legislation is up for review though, it should include going to ranking, prohibiting political PACs and party funded vendors for campaign tools. And it should be done while the Conservative Party is not in power as they tend to favour corporations rather than the voters who pay them.

It's been two weeks now and people seem surprised that the first retiree is content.

The first argument we had was about a "honey-do" list that people at his work were teasing him about. I said that's a very sexist term that I would have no part of. He has eyes, can look around and decide what tasks he's going to do/prioritize. We'll continue on the "person who is driven nuts first does the task" schedule.

Stepping back - when we lived in Calgary and had similar hours, we divided up the household tasks in terms of time taken and what we hate the least. When we moved and I didn't have a job, the chores mostly defaulted to me. I kept up a lot of them after we moved here because I finished work a couple hours before him.

Now I have to admire the winter routine he's created. He rarely wants the Macan right now (I'm sure that will change with the season) so he only occasionally drives me to work. Otherwise he catches up with what's going on in the world, exercises (I couldn't be that disciplined), cooks then does chore or not. I always thought he was just too tired to prioritize inessentials around the house and it's turned out to be true. Hopefully we'll be able to move somewhere with more outside year around weather.

Churchill is the perfect place to pump federal money into so make as sustainable as possible. As the North warms it will be more difficult to maintain the territories as part of Canada. Basic income (none of this northern allowance stuff) and greenhouses, alternate energy, self-sustaining water supplies to reduce living costs. Encourage Co-ops to create value added products. Hide it under a Space program if you have to.

What about the rail line? It is more important to service the community. I would get the MB or federal government to purchase it for a dollar as is, get federal money to repair the line..

Loneliness is a huge health factor. We need to know how to reach out...and how to respond.

I think it's normal to feel isolated at certain points and that's when loneliness can creep in. It's important to be able to ask for help. We all think we know what that means but do we? What if your regular group isn't that tolerant towards displays of "weakness"? Social media is great for some stuff but I think local hotlines and practice asking is important. As for responding? If you know someone is going through a time or has a history, consider setting aside some activities you can do in their presence, be proactive in checking in by text/messaging (to set a manageable time limit) and get your own support group active.

And recognize we can't know what other people are thinking even as they reach out.

The last weekend in February Duffy started having his legs go out from under him frequently.

He still wagged his tail and ran up and down the stairs. Sunday I took him for a walk and he just powered out. I ended up carrying him part way home. He recovered but I made a vet appointment. That afternoon, I could have gone back to work but instead puttered around the house. Duff sat in the chair with me and watched NCIS.

I got home Wednesday and he wagged his way over but he was twitchy and uncomfortable seeming so I called the vet for some painkillers. Very shortly after, the phone rang and he had a seizure. We zipped him over to the Animal Hospital. He recovered enough to know we were there but was clearly not coming around. It made the right decision easier and we said goodbye.

12 and a half years is a pretty good run. He was a very different cairn terrier than we are used to. Friendly and cuddly but not super confident. He taught me to be better at accepting and working with what is so everyone can be content.

Duffy would play ball for ever...or until the pool called him. He could be quite demanding:)

Duffy and I did obedience together.

Duffy and I did obedience together.

From this picture you would think he learned the automatic sit and all that. He never, ever, adjusted to other dogs in the class not being there to play. The only time he was focused on me was when he had flung himself off the deck and rolled then had a stiff neck. Too sore to play with others.

And with the separation thing, I could not leave his sight when he wasn't in a kennel, or with another member of our pack.

Separation anxiety made Duffy really hard to house train so pants it was.

After 2 years of marking I re-assessed the aim of house training. Containment so we could all enjoy the house was the goal so pee pants became the norm for Duffy. He really didn't notice and would stop at the door so I could put them on before he bolted away.

He seems to have figured stuff out in the last year but maybe that was a symptom of his kidney failure:(

Even though Duffy came by air he wasn't that comfortable travelling.

Whenever we went in a vehicle, if he wasn't in a kennel, he hunkered down behind a seat.

Duffy really adapted to winter.

It is winter here for way too many months of the year and he got really used to being in the snow. This winter they were happily going for walks down to -20C. Bathroom breaks were shorter.

That bowl...he would run all over clanking it and driving Milo crazy. We ended up having to anchor it.

Duffy had separation anxiety. The first day I left him in an expen in the kitchen I came home and found him hanging out with Milo. He had clambered up the expen, then used a blind slat to get over the top. I thought I had left it so he couldn't get out. Next day I was more careful, next day he was out again. That was the start of him hanging out with Milo.
