Not great weather for the Stat holiday but tomorrow should be nicer.

It's a nice May day - too bad it's the end of June. We're going close by to kayak so there's no rush to get anywhere. I'm going grocery shopping then we'll hit somewhere close this afternoon. This is with the Tab camera. Not as nice photos as the S8 but also less likely to be used.

It will be interesting to see how this generation ages

It will be interesting to see how this generation ages

One reason we are pulling the pin sooner than later is because I've seen many people either lose their health in that extra 5 years of work or be distracted because of elder care. The time has come to admit culturally that there are ways to contribute to society that precludes full time employment. I had a friend retire to provide child care for grandchildren. There is value in providing volunteer services or working for non-profits that cannot afford to compensate at corporate rates. I'm still a big fan of retiring earlier to provide an opportunity for younger workers so I've worked towards that goal. I am privileged to have that choice.

Against the odds, I got the Tab S3

Against the odds, I got the Tab S3

Against the odds because I reallly like the 8" form factor and the S3 doesnt' come in the 8" size. So no more carrying around one handed to use anywhere. The back is glass - the premium design everyone was so hot on - so it's slick and fingerprinty. I've also been spoiled by my S8 with the infinity screen and the fingerprint on the back. But it was on sale for $90 off and I traded in Tab S for $90 so the time seemed right.

It is blazing fast though and it is nice to use on a stand with a keyboard (like now). I like the pen even though there is nowhere to store it unlike the Tab A. I'm sure I"ll get used to it but I was immediately enthused about the 8" form factor so it seems like I'll be using my S8 more.

No financial crisis? Debt is no problem.

No financial crisis? Debt is no problem.

The government should continue to crack down on lenders making sure they have the capital to survive a downturn and that they are assessming borrowers appropriately. And yes, they should tax those investment properties higher if they are standing empty - if you can afford an empty house, you can afford more taxes because our culture - sustained by the government - stops squatters from laying claim to it.

Some day I'll really have to look at the background data so I can have an informed opinion. I'm sure people around here have a high debt load but we've been hit with the oil price fall out so we're well aware of the perils of over-inflated house prices. Two years ago when we started looking at places to retire, we could have had $200K added to our retirement fund. Now we'd break almost even on the same place and in a year we'll be priced out unless the US implodes its oil production.

Corporations exist to make money for stockholders. Banks are corporations.

Corporations exist to make money for stockholders. Banks are corporations.

Errors or cutting corners? Over charging started happening when banks expanded to provide financial services beyond accounts, loans and GIC type investments. We've been with IG, and another adviser before that; the physical paperwork is amazing. It was explained as being necessary for traceability. We haven't had that level of paperwork from a bank ever.

And like everything financial, the more money you have, the more breaks you get - it's exactly backwards. I remember the first time I didn't apply for a loan after inquiring. The bank called and asked why. I said I got a better rate elsewhere. They asked why I hadn't asked them to match. I didn't know I could bargain with the bank. Now I always do. And it's a matter of wealth and privilege even at the low level I enjoy. I have time to go to the bank and sit face to face and ask for fees to be waived. Our household finally met the threshold of "we have a financial planner you can use at no cost because you have enough assets." Actually we've been there awhile but they didn't notice.

It's difficult to build a relationship with your money lender these days, but worth while if you can find the time.

Canada celebrates Confederation on July 1st.🇨🇦

As far as country ages go, 150 is an odd birthday to pick for Canada. Why not a date from the 1600s? Or the 1760s after the battle of Abraham? I get 1982 doesn't give us the gravitas wanted for a G7 country but it would make sense and be inclusive. OTOH this is when we were one country coast to coast. Nothing highlights the oddity of nation building like our arbitrary birthday.

But I will enjoy the fireworks, I've got my 🍁 tshirt and jandals.

Unexpected side effect of using AndroidPay

Unexpected side effect of using AndroidPay

I didn't think using AndroidPay would really affect how I spend money, after all I had been using mobile apps and tap to pay for years and yet...

The advantage of having loyalty cards with your payment cards really can't be overstated. Scan, tap, done.

TD doesn't work with AndroidPay so I applied for my first new credit card in decades! While I'm there, what else does ScotiaBank offer than may interest me?

I can only tap up to $100 so I aim to be below that threshold even when grocery shopping. No more adding random items to the grocery list. Also easier to separate tasks into different budgets at the POS.

Do you notice cascade effects of what seemed like a small change?

When they came, most people were sympathetic but racist. Still racism is a couple orders of magnitude away from their experiences in their homeland. Like Syrian they were fleeing war and were so grateful to be here. I went to school with a couple and Fred worked with an engineer who had been a baby.

I wish governents that feel obliged to punish their citizenry by "re-education" would deport them to an accepting country instead and I hope Canada would be one of those accepting countries.

To be clear, I've had many doctors over the years as I live in a rural community (so many South African physicians) and have had health events. I really like reading negative reviews that are detailed. Most of the time, they do not use the device the same way I do so it gives another viewpoint. Busy cutting expenses to companies on the backs of women. When the economy tanks during his tenure he cut back on education (teachers - mostly women), public servants (mostly women) and nurses (mostly women). To add insult to injury, when he announced the cut to nurses the union tried to get ahead of the curve by identifying those would were willing to take one for the team.. So he demanded a second 5% cut. I don't know why workers have such an adversarial relationship with employers. /sarc

Conservatives in Alberta would like to be Trumpites but Canadian law doesn't allow for complete abandonment of its citizenry in the same way the US seems to.

What do people mean by fiscally responsible anyway? I want budgets on line with broad terms that are understandable. I also want to see that taxes for specific elements - ie carbon tax - gets spent on developing infrastructure related to renewable/sustainable. I expect the cost of accountability and auditing to be high but once in place. And I see that in place certainly in the PDCA management system being implemented at the federal level.

"The emerging field of plasmonics could bring advances in chemical manufacturing, usher in new clean and sustainable technologies and desalination systems to avert a future global water crisis.

"The emerging field of plasmonics could bring advances in chemical manufacturing, usher in new clean and sustainable technologies and desalination systems to avert a future global water crisis.
Plasmonic materials contain features, patterns or elements that enable unprecedented control of light by harnessing clouds of electrons called surface plasmons.
"Plasmonics offers the ultimate control over light and photochemistry, with the help of metallic nanostructures capable of concentrating electromagnetic energy into nanoscale volumes," said Vladimir M. Shalaev, Purdue University's Bob and Anne Burnett Distinguished Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering. "It may have a transformative impact on the way we will drive, manipulate, enhance, and monitor chemical processes in the future."
The potential for practical applications is discussed in a commentary to appear on Friday (June 2) in the Perspectives section of Science magazine. The article was written by visiting scientist Alberto Naldoni; Shalaev; and Mark Brongersma, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University.
Surface plasmons and "resonant nanostructures" might be harnessed for the ultra-efficient manufacture of chemicals and fuels. One example is the potential use of these nanostructures combined with semiconductor devices that harvest light to perform catalysis.
When semiconductors are illuminated, electrons are said to be "excited," moving from one energy level, or band, to another and leaving behind "holes." Surface plasmons are groups of electrons that collectively become excited and then "decay," or lose energy, re-emitting photons or highly energetic, "hot," electrons and holes. These hot electrons can be used to drive chemical reactions.
Innovations in plasmonics could make it possible to explore new types of chemistry that are typically only possible at high temperatures and pressures. The surface plasmons cause "local heating," which holds promise for applications such as chemical separation and distillation for industrial processes, and saltwater desalination.
"The world is facing a freshwater crisis, and cheap, efficient production of freshwater from saltwater would mean an end to this global challenge," Shalaev said. "Plasmonic nanoparticles can be self-assembled inside the nanochannels of a membrane that floats on water. Upon irradiation, the plasmonic device absorbs more than 96 percent of the solar spectrum and focuses the absorbed energy in nanoscale water volumes, enabling steam generation and efficient desalination."
Plasmonics also might be combined with DNA to produce custom-made "three-dimensional metamolecules" and light-driven molecular robots for applications in chemistry, technology and medicine".
