There must be a defined path back or there is no justice.

It really does start with education. I am a first aid instructor and we talked about consent and appropriate touch because I wanted people to be confident in their skills. Through out the class I demonstrated what would be definitely uncomfortable to me and we talked about how others felt about it then imagine being injured and at that person's mercy. Some interesting ideas came out...that are definitely outside of formal first aid training.

Stem cells that generate fat tissue have circadian clock

Stem cells that generate fat tissue have circadian clock

It matters when you eat, which is consistent with previous research.

New discoveries about the circadian-clock machinery in the precursors to fat cells may explain why shift workers are prone to metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, a Stanford study finds...The new research also illuminates a long-debated question: Should we avoid snacking at night? "I have to say, I think there's some truth to that," Feldman said. "I do think the timing of our meals is an overlooked factor; our bodies work best if we eat in defined periods during the day, and not during periods when we are not supposed to be active."

Thoughts I've had myself when reading reports It's strange that we see economists and business people blaming customers for not being able to afford things.

I think the scary thing is this could be the realization of the social change that started in the 60s. Equality, recognition of unjust governmental behaviour and our effects on the environment.

Sounds quality not the best but ok for housework music. The Echo will be here in a week and we'll see how that compares. The Dot may be going back...

First 48 hours with Gear Sport.

First 48 hours with Gear Sport.

I wasn't convinced I wanted to upgrade from my S2 Classic because it's the same size face and the same specs but...the more I heard about new features the more interested I got. Plus the IP 68 rating now that we're kayaking. It's 10 grams heavier and with the squirkle case shape, not as sleek as the S2 Classic.

Even though the specs are the same the device is much more responsive. The ergonomics are even better than the Classic. The 2 buttons are still quite flush with the case but now the back button has a different texture than the home button. The bezel is easier to grip to turn as well. On the down side; the bezel isn't quite as flush with the screen so I notice bumping into the edge when swiping up. It also feels a bit flimsier. Tizen 3 has some nice changes.

There was a lot about this being an activity based device so I've done 2 workouts so far, a pilates and a walk. Heart rate monitor is really solid. Starts monitoring as soon as the widget it turned on. With the Classic there wasn't a choice of workouts on a screen. You can either trigger or have it auto detect. Now that I have location turned on my route is automatically mapped. Pretty slick.

In spite of the size it's very comfortable to wear. The sport band will be handy in the summer when we're kayaking but I'll be switching to a leather one for winter.

Love my Instant Pot - didn't know it was Canadian. Cool

We found out early we prefer to cook stuff in a glass bowl on the trivet rather than going through the hassle of cleaning the big pot. We mostly use it for beans since you can go from cupboard to table in less than an hour. Definitely not the same flavour as slow cooking unless you amend the spices.

Have you tried it? What do you cook?

When we moved to a different city we had no feel for the housing market and the realtor was really focused on helping the sellers and the expense of the buyers. Sure that their job but your only real defence is the home inspection. We found a house size had been overstated so the bank would not mortgage even if we came up with the cash difference.

An easy way to save on electricity is to turn lights off - but what if you keep forgetting? This $20 switch is super reliable and there's a YouTube video to help with installation (always turn off the breaker). There is a range of times to stay on, day light detection and the motion detector is very sensitive. When we open the door the light is on by the time we step in. Best of all, the dogs do not trigger it.

We had an OHS inspection recently and were informed our work place violence policy (which also covers harassment) has to be clearly displayed, all incidents are already investigated and outside help offered. OTOH our office groups seems really uninformed with respect to all the health and safety initiatives we have.

One advantage of working for a multinational - even if they don't actually recognize Canada as a separate country like they do Mexico. I can see this being more difficult for small workplaces but they are also more likely to have unresolved problems.

Big cross-sectional analysis of data. I wonder what kinds of results researchers would get from FitBit or Samsung Health data. With Samsung you can't manually add data and it would be a world wide collection. With FitBit you might get a wider range of economic classes due to the cost of the devices. In both cases you would get people motivated to move more.

Audits and reviews rely on the questions asked and the metrics required.

A group with police ties does not have to be lax on police violence and can promote change. If the audit parameters are written set by a wide group of stakeholders and the audit reviewed by non-officers who can do spot checks there is room for continuous improvement. But only if the departments are held accountable for change.

A couple of questions I would have off the bat is whether the proportion of arrests match the population demographics and the charges are consistent across all the arrests. One big question is the goal of policing. Jailing people for breaking windows does not seem like a good use of resources.

I especially like Brit Marling because she wrote and starred in two of her own independent sci-fi films and now a series on Netflix she also wrote and stars in (The OA). Here Brit tells of how she was mostly only offered small hot blond bimbo parts in movies until she took the wheel and wrote her own screenplays:

“Bikini Babe 2” and “Blonde 4” are parts I auditioned for. If the female characters are lucky enough to have names, they are usually designed only to ask the questions that prompt the lead male monologue, or they are quickly killed in service to advancing the plot. Once, when I was standing in line for some open-call audition for a horror film, I remember catching my reflection in the mirror and realizing that I was dressed like a sex object. Every woman in line to audition for “Nurse” was, it seemed. We had all internalized on some level the idea that if we were going to be cast we’d better sell what was desired—not our artistry, not our imaginations—but our bodies.

It was having the power (which most actresses lack) of being her own writer that gave Brit the courage to stand up and walk out on Weinstein when he hit on her:

Consent is a function of power. You have to have a modicum of power to give it.... I think for me, I was able to leave Weinstein’s hotel room that day because I had entered as an actor but also as a writer/creator. Of those dual personas in me—actor and writer—it was the writer who stood up and walked out. Because the writer knew that even if this very powerful man never gave her a job in any of his films, even if he blacklisted her from other films, she could make her own work on her own terms and thus keep a roof over her head.

I’m telling this story because in the heat surrounding these brave admissions, it’s important to think about the economics of consent. Weinstein was a gatekeeper who could give actresses a career that would sustain their lives and the livelihood of their families. He could also give them fame, which is one of few ways for women to gain some semblance of power and voice inside a patriarchal world. They knew it. He knew it. Weinstein could also ensure that these women would never work again if they humiliated him. That’s not just artistic or emotional exile—that’s also economic exile.

Got a Fintie case with keyboard for my Tab S3. Nice!

I really like this keyboard. The keys have good travel and sound and it does have some short cuts. The only down side is it's in a foldable case so you have to adjust the keyboard position when you start typing (unlike a hinged keyboard.) Still the price was definitely right ~$30 and it has a pen holder. I was using a BT keyboard with stand before anyway, this just make it a nice package.

Speaking of updates.

Is the Pixel just for hard-core Google Android fans?

Is the Pixel just for hard-core Google Android fans?

Sure some of the problems are hardware but most of them can be resolved with software updates. I've had several Samsung devices and never seen this kind of consistent problem except with users who root and ROM. Samsung may be late the the update game but at least their updates don't break a significant number of phones and their response to a true hardware problem was comprehensive. That's because their devices are made for consumers but ALSO frequently already include the features being added. The other OEMs are the same with their upgrade cycles, rarely do they have the breadth of issues reported.

Updates are not the be all and end all of devices. Apple AFAIK brings out one update with maybe a couple of small fixes a year. Their users also rarely complain about devices breaking on updating (again AFAIK) You want to play with the big boys you need reliability.

Things I didn't know but don't surprise me.

Things I didn't know but don't surprise me.

Kids explore different roles as they grow up and those roles may not be considered appropriate by their parents because of their ideas of what is and isn't right for boys and girls. Wanting to be a "fireman" when they grow up is not the same as wanting to be a man. To raise a healthy child you may want to talk to a professional who will know...

_...“gender variant youth” is actually a super-group, with three smaller groups of people within that, all of whom have distinct medical needs:

Gender role non-conforming: Children who are dissatisfied, for whatever reason, with the expectations specifically thrust upon them because of their assigned sex.
Gender questioning: Any children who have doubts about their identity, but are unsure of how to articulate it.
Gender dysphoric: Children who express a persistent distress associated with their sexed attributes._

Being kind and non-judgemental is an amateur way to help.
