Now that we're not moving, updating the house is fun - except for living in a reno.

We're finally updating the upstairs flooring and decided to go with Torlys vinyl plank. We're pulling up the carpet and removing the baseboard in preparation. Luckily we have a couple weeks. Torlys has a neat room visualizer.

We're considering changing out the downstairs fireplace next winter to open up the space. We currently have a see through peninsula style gas fireplace and we're going to install more of an in wall style. It shouldn't be to expensive since the gas is all in. We'd have to do some flooring under the system we're taking out...that could be interesting.

In order for kids to freely engage in independent outdoor play, parents have to take the time to fully engage with their neighborhood, integrating it into their daily lives.

Reading the independent play literature, I see a lot of references to adults who either generally disapprove of kids playing independently outside, or who have actually inhibited kids from playing in any number of ways including stopping the kids to ask what they're doing, haranguing the parents, or worst of all: calling the police. Allowing kids to play independently outside is an important issue to me, and I'm glad to see it's being addressed, not only by concerned parents, but also by governments--Utah recently passed a law that 'legalizes' kids playing outside on their own. Kids playing outside is an odd thing to have to legalize in a 'free' country, but in the face of the police being called when kids are spotted alone, I suppose some guidance is necessary.

While I've also written about how it would be nice if over-protective non-parents, (I call them ravens), would chill out, it occurred to me that I haven't seen pieces about how we--parents of kids who play outside--could help these non-parents to chill.

I don't know if there's a method that will help every neighborhood and neighbor. I don't even know if the method I'm about to describe helped in our neighborhood where we haven't had any issues at all with people who live here. It could be that we're just lucky and that our neighborhood is just naturally awesome.

Having said all that though, here's the one tenet I suspect has helped our family in our quest for the kids to be able to roam independently:

In order for kids to freely engage in independent outdoor play, parents have to take the time to fully engage with their neighborhood, integrating it into their every day lives.

How we Discovered this Tenet
Three years ago when we moved from our small town, suburban neighborhood to the 'big city' of San Francisco, my partner had only one request for how she'd like our lifestyle to change. "I'd like to make sure that we know our neighbors at our next house." In the neighborhood we were moving from, the houses were widely spaced apart, there were no sidewalks, everyone drove everywhere; we just didn't see our neighbors much. In addition to all these excuses, I have to admit, I never made any effort to get to know our neighbors.

Meeting the Neighbors
Since we were moving to the city I had wanted to live in since I first visited it at the age of 10, I thought it was the least I could do to work as hard as I could on my partner's one simple request. I made sure to approach each neighbor we saw to introduce myself, my partner, and the kids. We also found out their story, their names, what they did for a living, how long they'd been in the neighborhood; all interesting stuff.

The layout of our neighborhood worked in my favor this time. The houses aren't just close together, they're adjacent; the sidewalk is huge; almost no one drives everywhere because public transit is just that good; the weather is gorgeous most of the time, so people are outside more.

What Happened Next
Parenting books and websites talk a lot about modeling positive behavior for kids, so what happened next shouldn't have been a surprise. The kids started meeting more of our neighbors on their own! They became fast friends with the gentlemen who own our local convenience store--they were the first people then five year-old No. One wanted to invite to our house for Thanksgiving. They met a retiree who lives a few blocks away and walks her dog every day. While out with their Director of Tac Ops, (aka nanny), they met other people in the park whose dogs met our dog. They met neighbors who rode the same buses they did. You get the idea. I routinely meet people who ask me if I'm the gangs dad because they see me out with the same dog they see the kids with, or they think they've seen me walking by with the kids that they ride the bus with. The simple act of getting out to meet our neighbors is now self-perpetuating itself through the kids' daily lives.

And so...
The kids do hangout outside; they play by themselves in nearby parks; and thankfully, we've haven't had a single issue in the neighborhood. Is it because we know our neighbors? I think so. Even if our neighbors weren't the super-cool people that they are, I think it's a lot harder to make trouble for someone you know than for someone who's basically anonymous to you.

Oh, and one other thing. Even though I know it's safer than ever for kids to be out and about on their own, I also know that I still worry. I don't worry as much as I might though. The kids have built up a network of people that know them, and who are looking out for them.

I didn't realize when we met our neighbors--a simple friendly task--we'd be making the environment we live in so much better for the kids. I'm so glad we did it anyway though. I don't worry so much about ravens anymore, and it's really nice that the kids are getting to grow up in a world that's inclusive of them, rather than dismissing, or simply oblivious.

I admit, I am an adult trainer. On Valentine's day this year I gave out glow in the dark window jellies to people who chose to attend training on their scheduled day off. (they were shooting stars, UFOs and moons btw) No one left them which is a promising sign. I did mention they were child safe.

I know teachers have time restrictions but primary school events I remember are teachers reading to us (grade 4), movies on occasional Friday afternoons (grade 1-3), teachers in my town seem to have options so food isn't always the reward.

Perhaps because I've never had children and went through menopause in my early 40s I escaped the emotional trauma that is menopause for some women. I thought of it more along the lines of returning to the freedom I had before puberty. The women I talk to now about it mostly joke about hot flashes - whereupon I pull out the advice I got from my doctor to get a low dose blood pressure medication to take at night. I probably didn't seem any more irritable than I had been because I've always been impatient (mostly with myself).

Travails of an old dog - finally getting the help he needed.

Since there are extra ticks up here we decided to get Milo to the vet early for his annual and get a geriatric panel done so we have a better idea of his health. He had some bladder crystals so the vet put him on antibiotics. Next day he was like a sack of dog, barely walking and in big pain. He could barely turn his head and was very limp. Checked his bloodwork results and nothing was there. We used some Tramadol we had left over from Duffy and stayed home with him. Got some NSAIDs to help with inflammation pain.

Welp - he must have been passing a bladder crystal because he's back to normal. As a bonus, his loud snoring has gone away. I'll give him the Rheumacam for a couple more days and let him finish his anti-biotics. I really want him to meet Bennie in August.

Oh and this is a great picture of the floor that will be all vinyl plank in a couple weeks.

What better way to get into small business than franchising? Alberta has tax laws carved out to help small business and there can be a consistent product offered. Way better than the pyramids like schemes that home businesses seem based on as they don't rely on selling to friends and pursuing others to sell the product. Of course you have to be personable as you have employees and customers but the franchise operation would hopefully help with that as well.

Kindle Paperwhite - kind of irritating and I don't think a more expensive Kindle is the answer.

I got the paperwhite for holiday reading, and for reading uninterrupted by internet use. It has amazing battery life and a great screen for reading but there are a couple things that drive me nuts. If someone can tell me a setting where fonts stay consistent over different books, I would really like that. It drives me nuts to need to constantly adjust the font size. Also the screen sensitivity is not great for page turning and I like to read white font on black background.

It is lighter than books and does fulfill the object of longer battery life and reading in sunlight. Overall, though, I'd rather read on my S8 if my tablet isn't available.

So many options, so much lack of imagination our part. Including not being constricted by work.

One thing about planning for retirement is the post retirement vision...other than the "not working" part. How much change do we want?

Duffy has died and Milo is 15 - do we want another dog? That's a 15 year commitment where we would not travel for more than 3 weeks out of country in a row (two weeks ideally). The dogs have been my dogs and I can't imagine not having them. I've put my name down for a pup and we're picking names (boydog call named Benny as a nod to Corben Dallas), not deciding on if.

Do we stay or do we go? We know what our costs are to stay here and it's way less expensive to update the floor and travel from here than it is to move out to the coast. What pulls us to the coast is easily managed as long as you have the time and money (which we will). On the other hand - we have very different tolerances for the weather here. I don't mind the cold of winter, I mind the shoulder months where I expect warmer weather and the snow is here. I want to wear my cute shoes and be outside in the longer evenings. Fred would be happy going away for 6 weeks at a time if we didn't have dogs.

We agree we don't want to downsize. That is not the shared space. Could also go to a 2 car garage. That's a custom home and no way will we find that for what our home would sell for here. We looked and we're not getting an ocean view or even a mountain view for what we can budgeting. Or the interior space. Or access to public transit to negate the need for a second car.

Pros for staying - home that we like with $ to update, home, vehicle and lots of holidays
Pros for moving - not need for as many holidays; cheaper travel (YVR access), no spring allergies.

I know we are lucky to have these choices.

Like I said, lack of imagination.

Pregnancy is a life changing experience for your body. The LEAST the medical profession could do is look after the woman after birth to help her body recover as much as possible.

How could it not be? Your body goes through huge physical and hormonal changes. For physicians to shrug off problems as things that will go away is irresponsible. After all, we set broken bones for best case healing - why bother when they will mend anyway.

I live in an area with a reasonable birthrate. Most women have one to 3 children. Every one of my friends who had children seem to accept how they were treated before and after and the doctors I've seen have been pretty sensitive about both patients. But it's really easy to focus on the baby as being more vunerable so worthy of effort. Luckily women can take up to a year off to recover.
